In our discussions about the future, one thing remains constant: the focus on human experience. For the most part, all our futures are human-centered. The unit of measurement for a good future is one that's good for the human. The unit of measurement is the human. But I've been pondering a question that challenges us to think beyond ourselves: When you envision your future, who stands next to you? What do they look like? Who are they? This question invites us to consider not just our individual futures, but the collective future we're creating. It encourages us to think about diversity, inclusion, and the interconnectedness of our lives and aspirations. As leaders and innovators, expanding our vision to include others can lead to more inclusive and sustainable futures. It challenges us to consider perspectives beyond our own and to create futures that benefit not just ourselves, but our communities and society at large. In a world where so much feels beyond our control—especially in times of political change and societal uncertainty—finding alignment within ourselves becomes even more essential. While we cannot control others' behaviors and decisions at large, one powerful way to start finding internal alignment is by looking honestly at where we are today. By simply writing down a list of 10 areas of your life, rating each from 1 to 10 (10 being most aligned and 1 being least aligned), we can build awareness around both what we appreciate and where we feel off course.   This exercise isn’t about grand gestures; it’s about the small, actionable steps (creating new habits) we can take to create peace and fulfillment in our lives, regardless of external factors. The goal is to identify where you’re already aligned and appreciate those areas, then look at the areas where you feel a gap. Think of it as “start small, think big.” By taking small steps, even if that means adjusting your daily habits, we can work towards a bigger vision for our lives without getting overwhelmed.   For example, if you rate your health a 5, ask yourself, "What’s one small thing I can do to bring that up a notch?" Or if your relationships are an 8, recognize and appreciate the value in that area. Awareness through this kind of self-assessment allows us to see where we might begin to create new habits, creating a sense of empowerment over our lives, no matter what’s happening outside of us.   In the face of global uncertainty, we can’t always change the behaviors of others, but we can always choose how we respond, align our actions with our values, and nurture our own inner peace. This simple list can remind us that change starts within, and even the smallest steps can lead us toward a greater sense of fulfillment and purpose.   Let this practice be a tool for reconnecting with yourself, appreciating where you are, and taking those first small steps towards where you want to be. Remember that this is a process, and it’s okay that it takes time. The important thing is to acknowledge the steps, even the small ones, towards alignment and fulfillment.

A highly relatable and contemporary documentary with many layers explores these themes. Its ethnographic research approach sets an excellent example of how to measure our ever-evolving opinions and needs in the context of continuous change. To me, these two researchers are true change leaders—supported by the King’s sponsorship, which fosters active participation, and thus, meaningful outcomes. They would be most welcome to join our team of HOST Consultants! 😊 Its about The Gross National Happiness Index (GNH) of Bhutan which is a unique development philosophy introduced by Bhutan to measure the collective happiness and well-being of its citizens. The GNH framework takes a 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. It emphasizes the 𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹, 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 of the nation alongside material prosperity. A beautiful approach I included in my Sociology research thesis on pro-social behavior and the drivers behind it— why varies it among individuals, organizations, and societies. The findings revealed that factors like 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀, 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀, and 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 significantly influence the extent of pro-social actions of its citizens. If you were to ask me today, I would say: pro-social behavior thrives when people feel 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱—𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀, 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺. Experiencing a certain level of happiness provides the mental and emotional bandwidth to empathize with others' needs, moving beyond fears, criticism and scepticism. Reflecting on our 2011 newsletter, which was published in De Ware Tijd, research had shown that “servant leadership” was a foreign concept to many managers and leaders across various organizations. Yet, after a year of dedicated publications and discussions, it was heartening to see everyone embracing the idea of servant leadership. It’s a reminder of the power of persistent dialogue and education in shifting mindsets. However, it’s unfortunate that over time, political parties began using it as one of their many buzzwords, diluting its true essence. Servant leadership is not a fleeting trend; it’s a deeply rooted commitment to serve and uplift others, putting the needs of people first. Let’s continue to champion authentic leadership that inspires, serves, and makes a meaningful difference, beyond any political agenda.
