One of my favorite things about the executive search industry is that it is not "one-size-fits-all". I have always put a huge emphasis on truly listening to my client's pain points and challenges in finding top talent when engaging in a new search. Oftentimes, the struggles are the same, but every company has its unique needs we need to solve for at Transcend Search & Strategy What surprises me is when I hear horror stories from my clients about other executive search firms pushing their own agendas and not always doing what's in the best interest of the client and/or candidate. My approach and style may not be the right fit for every client, and that's okay! Not every client is the right fit for me either, but that's what makes this business exciting. My purpose is to act as an extension of your company, representing you in the market as you'd want. First impressions are everything, right? The common theme I am hearing from the VC/PE Talent Partners and the Executive Search community, is that the name on the door of the search firm is not the most important factor in winning work. Talent Partners are looking for the individual track record of the Search Partner they are working with and they want that Partner to be leading the search, not palming it off to the team. Weekly at Tempting Talent, we speak with Principals or Partners who are at big name firms, who are reticent to leave their brand. Rather than viewing joining a boutique as taking a risk, you should view this is an opportunity to build your PERSONAL brand. Winning and completing 10 searches yourself, will outweigh being a part of 20 searches under someone else!

Random Thought Edition #2: Every company is a recruitment company. The quality of the people that you hire will ultimately determine your success much more than essentially any other factor - at least if you want to build a big company and not rely on the infinite talent and work ethic of a single individual (e.g. Jordan 🧙♂️). As such, especially at the beginning you will (or at least should) spend much more time hiring for the people that will shape your company than you would have expected. While there are no real shortcuts to this, here are 3 things I have learned or tried to stick to over the past 12 months at Berg Search 🗻: 1) Strong references are worth (at least) as much as an interview, especially from people you trust 2) Never underestimate your gut – when a candidate says all the right things but your Body Intelligence still isn't convinced, be very careful 3) If it's not a F**K YES, it's a no. At some point you might consider hiring someone below average to help you stem excessive temporary workload - what you may underestimate at the time is how much this might impact your high-performers who are proud of being part of such a high-performing team.
