Evaluation and policy wonks (yes, that's you Eleanor Williams, Charlie Tulloch & Josephine Norman). This paper examines the impact of 128 program evaluations and finds "credibility and generalisability [of the evaluations] are unrelated to spending, but evaluations conducted quickly (within four years of the effect year) and attributable to the political party in power, are significantly predictive of spending." Interesting? https://lnkd.in/gQaDxbpr

Knowledge And Decisions With a new preface by the author, this reissue of Thomas Sowell's classic study of decision making updates his seminal work in the context of The Vision of the Annointed, Sowell, one of America's most celebrated public intellectuals, describes in concrete detail how knowledge is shared and disseminated throughout modern society. He warns that society suffers from an ever-widening gap between firsthand knowledge and decision making—a gap that threatens not only our economic and political efficiency, but our very freedom because actual knowledge gets replaced by assumptions based on an abstract and elitist social vision f what ought to be.Knowledge and Decisions, a winner of the 1980 Law and Economics Center Prize, was heralded as a ”landmark work” and selected for this prize ”because of its cogent contribution to our understanding of the differences between the market process and the process of government.” In announcing the award, the center acclaimed Sowell, whose ”contribution to our understanding of the process of regulation alone would make the book important, but in reemphasizing the diversity and efficiency that the market makes possible, [his] work goes deeper and becomes even more significant.” #BookRecommendation #GoodReads #Books #ReadingList #BookCommunity #BookLovers #Bookworm #NowReading #BookClub #Inspiration #Motivation #GrowthMindset #LifelongLearning #ThoughtProvoking #MustRead #BookOfTheDay #WeekendReads #PageTurner #TopPicks https://lnkd.in/gXybbJYy

"Throughout its twenty-five chapters, The Cambridge Handbook on the Material Constitution, edited by Marco Goldoni and Michael A. Wilkinson and published by Cambridge University Press, masterfully reorients the debate on the concept of material constitution. The book under review is undoubtedly one of the most notable and accomplished projects on the material constitution in recent decades. In a “battle over the glamour and misery of modernity” (at 151), we recall George Steiner’s diagnosis of the disquieting “core-tiredness” of the twentieth century. While the transition to the twenty-first century reveals a frenetic world that often disdains deep thinking, this book is an exception. The Cambridge Handbook on the Material Constitution is an exquisite delight to the mind: an intellectual delicacy." More here: https://lnkd.in/d3tESVcf

Happy to see the joint paper with Pragyan Deb, Nour Tawk, Jonathan D. Ostry and Naihan Yang on the effects of fiscal measures during COVID-19 finally published in JMCB. We construct a novel database of daily fiscal policy announcements for 52 countries from January 1 to December 31, 2020. Results suggest that fiscal policy announcements have been effective in stimulating economic activity, boosting confidence, and reducing unemployment. In addition, while lifeline measures were more effective when COVID-19 containment policies were stringent—providing cashflow support to most affected firms and households, demand support measures were more effective when containment measures were relaxed. read more here: https://lnkd.in/e8y5ZSNZ #fiscalpolicy #fiscalmultiplier #covid

Combining rigorous scholarship with evocative and accessible prose, the book covers all the issues central to the pandemic and the disastrous policy response, a narrative as comprehensive as it is intellectually devastating. ~Gigi Foster, Paul Frijters, & Michael Baker The Great Covid Panic https://a.co/d/9D3Snw1
