Knowledge And Decisions With a new preface by the author, this reissue of Thomas Sowell's classic study of decision making updates his seminal work in the context of The Vision of the Annointed, Sowell, one of America's most celebrated public intellectuals, describes in concrete detail how knowledge is shared and disseminated throughout modern society. He warns that society suffers from an ever-widening gap between firsthand knowledge and decision making—a gap that threatens not only our economic and political efficiency, but our very freedom because actual knowledge gets replaced by assumptions based on an abstract and elitist social vision f what ought to be.Knowledge and Decisions, a winner of the 1980 Law and Economics Center Prize, was heralded as a ”landmark work” and selected for this prize ”because of its cogent contribution to our understanding of the differences between the market process and the process of government.” In announcing the award, the center acclaimed Sowell, whose ”contribution to our understanding of the process of regulation alone would make the book important, but in reemphasizing the diversity and efficiency that the market makes possible, [his] work goes deeper and becomes even more significant.” #BookRecommendation #GoodReads #Books #ReadingList #BookCommunity #BookLovers #Bookworm #NowReading #BookClub #Inspiration #Motivation #GrowthMindset #LifelongLearning #ThoughtProvoking #MustRead #BookOfTheDay #WeekendReads #PageTurner #TopPicks https://lnkd.in/gXybbJYy

Anyone wanting to reflect on the hegemony of the consulting industry in contemporary business, where the dominant form of communication is the "deck," should read this article. Think about how a PowerPoint slide deck helps consultants assert facts and manufacture premature consensus instead of opening up room for nuanced discussion. I'd add more but you would probably stop reading. Let me finish with an icon. 🙂

"I agree. So then, sage, tell me: How can it be that citizens that are not directly dependent on the masters are nevertheless indirectly dependent on them?...Citizens that are not directly dependent on the masters do not depend on the masters to be managed or provided for because they are capable of this on their own. But these few citizens nevertheless live among the many citizens who are not capable of this, and thus they live within a society that is managed and provided for by the masters...Ah! I wondered how this could be...Because the capable citizens are nevertheless dependent on the masters, albeit indirectly, they are, to a degree, controlled by masters who manage and provide for all of society. And because the masters control the means of provision, and the capable citizens interact with the masters within that society, those capable citizens are still subject to the rules, laws, and policies of the masters so long as they remain within that society." (Excerpt from Masters of Society, pp. 22-23) Are masters necessary in society? How can the citizens check those masters? How do the masters keep their power and control? Who controls the morals of a society? How can citizens be free if the masters have the power and control? These questions (and more) are discussed in detail in this book, Masters of Society, from the series The Sage and the Seeker. "Where the majority of citizens in society are hopelessly dependent on the masters for management and provisions, the few citizens independent of the masters are not. However, these few citizens, whilst not directly dependent on the masters, nevertheless would not necessarily be able to check the corrupt masters. This is because the masters hold power that is centralized thereby controlling society more efficiently whereas the few citizens do not possess such centralized power. But it is also because the masters control the means of provision by their rules and laws and policies, and because society depends on them for these provisions, the masters have leverage over society through this dependency dynamic–this includes the few citizens who, although not directly dependent on the masters for management or provisions, are nevertheless tethered to society and therefore indirectly dependent on the masters in this sense." "I get that. But how do the masters ensure no citizen has the opportunity to organize in a way that enables that citizen or citizen group to centralize their own power?...Recall, the masters devise and implement the rules, laws, and policies for society. If the masters create the system in which the citizens must live and function, then the masters can control society with that system...So, in essence, the masters have rigged the game that the citizens play?...It would appear so. And by creating the system society is bound by and dependent on, the masters can ensure their power over and control of society. Practically speaking, the masters either have power over and control of society or they do not. Whether the issue is more about semantics or practicality, we both appear to agree that the capable citizens cannot organize in such a way as to centralize their own power base effectively enough without the permission or influence of the corrupt masters which, by that logic, would mean any such centralization of power by the capable citizens would not be effective to check the corrupt masters unless the masters allowed this or orchestrated it." "Very well, sage. So, this is how capable citizens indirectly depend on the masters while not directly depending on the masters...Yes, but only insofar as the capable citizens remain within that society. To the degree the citizen resides within the society, interacts with it, and benefits from it, that citizen is controlled by the rules, laws, and policies of the masters of that society. So even if that capable citizen can self-manage, the management by the masters in that society will still touch, in some way to some degree, that citizen because the management rules, laws, and policies will still apply to that citizen within that society. In this sense, the capable citizen is not directly dependent on being managed by the masters because that citizen is self-responsible within that dynamic and can therefore self-manage, but that citizen will be indirectly dependent on the masters who devise and implement the rules, laws, and policies controlling that society because these aspects of that management will also control that capable citizen to a degree." (Excerpt from Masters of Society, p. 23) Are masters necessary in society? How can the citizens check those masters? How do the masters keep their power and control? "I may be a simpleton, but I’m beginning to realize the senselessness of my expectations. As “simple” as it may be for society to break their dependency by severing themselves from the masters, what then? If citizens separate from the masters, then of course they’re no longer dependent on those masters. But as we already agreed, masters are necessary for an ordered society because most citizens are neither self-responsible nor able to self-sustain...It is quite a conundrum we have here. If this majority of citizens became truly independent of the masters, that majority would become a separate society unto itself, severed from dependency on the masters. But that society would then need masters to manage it and provide for it because no society ever possessed a majority of citizens who were self-responsible nor could self-sustain without management by or provision from masters. As experience shows, there are only ever a few citizens within society that are self-responsible and can self-sustain but never a majority–this is a constant theme found throughout history."
