I've seen a lot of talk on LinkedIn recently about a candidate shortage in cyber security. I don't think this is true. What is clear is that cyber threats are on the rise, and businesses are feeling the pressure. What is also clear is that a large volume of specialist cyber security roles remain unfilled. This would suggest that there is a candidate shortage in the field. However, I think this is somewhat misleading. For a recent role I had for a SOC Analyst, I received over 800 applications, of which over 500 had the experienced required. This was a junior position, and I was inundated with great candidates for the role. Compare this to a more 'specialist' security role I had. For this, I had over 400 applications, but only around 35 people had the right skills. Once I filtered out those in the wrong location or without the certification the business wanted, this dropped to just 3 people. That's less than 1% of those who applied. What is obvious is that there is a skills shortage in cyber security. There's plenty of people wanting to get into the industry, but not enough seasoned cyber security professionals to fill the huge volume of specialist jobs. Most businesses simply don't have the time or resources to develop people from scratch, leaving the industry in a vicious cycle which seemingly has no obvious fix to the skills shortage. What can we do to ensure the cyber security sector has enough people with the specialist skills needed to thrive? #CyberSecurity #SkillShortage #TalentAcquisition

💥How to Land a Non-Tech Career in the $7B Cyber Sector💥 When you think of a career in cyber security, do you picture a coder or technical whiz? Uncovering the cybersecurity skills shortage myth: https://lnkd.in/dyV2_UGx The reality, in most cases, is that organizations are trying to hirer individuals with a job skills requirement that would take most at least 15 - 20 years to accumulate. Yet, they offer salaries that are suitable for 3-5 year professionals. #keepitreal #realism #cybersecurityskillsshortage #myth #jobmarket #jobsearch

I agree with what this article says. It's an eye opening on the current cybersecurity landscape, especially the job market and the so called "entry level" roles that actually can't be entry level! Would you call a first time C level job an "entry" level? Interesting reading.

I can see where this article is coming from. There are a lot of people ready to join the cybersecurity industry. People with different cultural backgrounds, work experiences, educational backgrounds. So I can see where they say there isn't a shortage, there is a reluctance to reduce the barriers to entry! I have been preaching about this for sometime. There needs to be an understanding that we need to begin reducing the barriers ASAP in order to build the workforce in cybersecurity. More and more companies are adopting cybersecurity measures to protect their environment, data, and people! There is room for all levels of cybersecurity professionals. this is why CyberNow Labs, a National Cyber Group company exists. Trade school mentality is our approach and it is what allows people of all backgrounds to get a solid base level training with real-world situations, using real enterprise grade security tools and making real-world documentations and recommendations. I encourage companies to examine their "Entry-Level" cyber professional positions and make changes! Let your seasoned and experienced staff shadow with new people to get them hired and build those SOC teams. Breaches are happening more and more every day. Changes have to be made!!! #reducebarrierstoentry #entrylevel #SOCanalyst #SOCManager https://lnkd.in/e6pP5g2x

"A new study by CyberSN warns that the overall number of cybersecurity job postings in the US decreased by 22% from 2022 to 2023. The cyber job platform provider added that this decline is alarming and could impact national security, as some of these roles are essential for maintaining organizational and national cyber defenses. The most significant decline is in research roles, which saw a general 69% drop year-on-year between 2022 and 2023. According to CyberSN, this suggests a move away from proactive threat analysis and mitigation. Job postings for engineer roles have also significantly decreased, with the most posted role in the cybersecurity field, security engineer, experiencing a 21% drop. However, according to the CyberSN study, not all cyber roles are in decline. For instance, response roles saw the largest growth, with a 100% increase in job postings, indicating a shift towards reactionary measures rather than preventative strategies." #cybersecurity Meanwhile, product security engineers' job ads have plummeted by 57%.

There seems to be a significant disconnect between aspiring cybersecurity individuals and students regarding landing or knowing one’s own future career opportunities. With cybersecurity being such a large industry that needs to fill job roles, I think this will help illuminate what it means to be a professional in this industry and help those unaware of the targets they are trying to hit for the role they are pursuing. There is no reason for someone who is educated or possesses certifications in cybersecurity to be lost or at wits' end about which job roles to apply to or what those job roles entail. Also, there is a lot here, but this is not all of them! There are specialized units within the government that perform associated cybersecurity objectives that are not listed or out of your reach.
