A new study by CyberSN warns that the overall number of cybersecurity job postings in the US decreased by 22% from 2022 to 2023. The CyberSN report draws from over 140,000 monthly cybersecurity job postings across 45 functional cybersecurity roles over the past two years. The cyber job platform provider added that this decline is alarming and could impact national security, as some of these roles are essential for maintaining organizational and national cyber defenses. The most significant decline is in research roles, which saw a general 69% drop year-on-year between 2022 and 2023. Job postings for engineer roles have also significantly decreased, with the most posted role in the cybersecurity field, security engineer, experiencing a 21% drop. However, according to the CyberSN study, not all cyber roles are in decline. For instance, response roles saw the largest growth, with a 100% increase in job postings, indicating a shift towards reactionary measures rather than preventative strategies." #cybersecurity Meanwhile, product security engineers' job ads have plummeted by 57%.

Job postings for certain cybersecurity positions have dropped so much, it is affecting national security. One survey shows fewer openings in insider-threat analysis, product-security engineering, and DevSecOps. That is according to analysis by a company called CyberSN, which helps clients manage cybersecurity talent. For the details, the Federal Drive with Tom Temin talked with founder and CEO Deidre Diamond. #FederalDrivewithTomTemin #CyberWorkforce

I agree with what this article says. It's an eye opening on the current cybersecurity landscape, especially the job market and the so called "entry level" roles that actually can't be entry level! Would you call a first time C level job an "entry" level? Interesting reading.

I can see where this article is coming from. There are a lot of people ready to join the cybersecurity industry. People with different cultural backgrounds, work experiences, educational backgrounds. So I can see where they say there isn't a shortage, there is a reluctance to reduce the barriers to entry! I have been preaching about this for sometime. There needs to be an understanding that we need to begin reducing the barriers ASAP in order to build the workforce in cybersecurity. More and more companies are adopting cybersecurity measures to protect their environment, data, and people! There is room for all levels of cybersecurity professionals. this is why CyberNow Labs, a National Cyber Group company exists. Trade school mentality is our approach and it is what allows people of all backgrounds to get a solid base level training with real-world situations, using real enterprise grade security tools and making real-world documentations and recommendations. I encourage companies to examine their "Entry-Level" cyber professional positions and make changes! Let your seasoned and experienced staff shadow with new people to get them hired and build those SOC teams. Breaches are happening more and more every day. Changes have to be made!!! #reducebarrierstoentry #entrylevel #SOCanalyst #SOCManager https://lnkd.in/e6pP5g2x

Following a conversation with Andrew Cardwell on whether there is a shortage of cybersecurity professionals, this article makes for interesting reading. According to the article, job descriptions may be pushing unnecessary certifications. For example, entry-level SOC analyst roles are requiring CISSP certification, which is typically a qualification for CIO-type roles. As a lead auditor for information security management system (ISO/IEC 27001), I concur. Cyber threats are rising. According to recent Chainanalysis report confirms that ransomware payments have exceeded $1 Billion (2023), a record high after 2022 decline.
