"No soup for you!" - Campbell's in a month or two when they become The Campbell's Company. To use or not to use a descriptor. That is the question that comes up allllllll the time in naming, especially with growing tech companies. They often have a visceral reaction to being "NewCo AI" or "NewCo Electric" or "NewCo Network" and want to skip over the Apple Computers stage right to the Apple stage. I get it. But often times you need that descriptor for two reasons: 1️⃣ Wayfinding Customers need to be able to place you in a category mentally. Whether you like it or not, whether you're willing to invest in inventing a new category or not. To quote another Seinfeld episode "Why don't you just tell me the name of the movie you selected?" Your customers are busy people. Just tell 'em what you do. 2️⃣ Ownability If you can't own the trademark on the pure name without the descriptor, sometimes, you need to add the descriptor (and actually truly use it) for awhile before you grow enough to make the case to drop it. And whatever amount of time and investment you think you need to be able to drop that descriptor, it's higher. If you have a product or service that needs a new name (or does it?) or you're securing funding for the next big thing, let's chat about some considerations to have in mind when giving it a name.
