It's easy to take for granted how a bag of coffee beans or a jar of spaghetti sauce gets up on the shop shelf, but there's a complicated process behind the scenes. For instance, we faced a hiccup just last week when a key supplier had a delay. Within hours, our team re-routed orders, updated timelines, and kept production on track. That experience reminded me of a few key things 1. Supplier Partnerships are Key "Our suppliers aren’t just vendors; they’re partners. Strong relationships mean that when issues arise, we can work together to solve them quickly 2. Data Helps Us See Ahead "With demand forecasts and real-time tracking, we’re always a few steps ahead. It’s incredible how data allows us to anticipate and adjust—ensuring we get the right products at the right time." 3. Sustainability is the Future "Every choice we make in the supply chain has a ripple effect. We’re increasingly focused on sustainable sourcing, packaging, and transportation, knowing that every small change makes a big difference Working in the supply chain means constant problem-solving and creativity. I was pleased to talk to Marina Mayer, Food Logistics as part of this months cover feature on the outlook for cold chain transportation. The article is well worth a read - key messages: ❄ the overall picture is one of long term growth, but with significant demand fluctuations to navigate (when it has ever not been so!) ❄compliance and equipment costs remain the biggest risks for business to manage - including the regulatory pressure to decarbonise ❄ some evidence of greater 'nearshoring' of trade flows because of geopolitical and global logistics disruptions My conclusion "we don’t expect dramatic change in the balance between local, regional and global food trade flows. It is also vital to remember that security and resilience come from having access to food from a range of suppliers and locations both locally and across the world."
