🚨 Cultivated Meat Ban Deemed Unjustified 🚨 The European Commission has declared Hungary's proposed ban on cultivated meat as "unjustified" and a threat to the EU single market. The Commission emphasized that the ban could disrupt the EU’s harmonized novel foods approval process, which includes thorough scientific assessments by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Despite the lack of evidence against cultivated meat, Hungary’s stance has drawn criticism from Member States like Sweden, the Netherlands, and Lithuania, who argue it goes against the principles of free trade and innovation. With the regulatory framework for cultivated meat continuing to evolve, it’s clear that science and consumer choice should lead the way. 🎉 Thrilled to share that my latest article "Food Policy Coherence and Integration: A Review of Adopted Methodologies" has been published in the latest special issue of the Italian Review of Agricultural Economics - REA! In this comprehensive review, I explored the critical need for a coherent and integrated approach to food policy to tackle the challenges of our food systems. 🔍 The article delves into the complexities of Food Policy Coherence and Integration (PCI), examining the various methodologies adoped in assessing this crucial aspect. Adopting a bibliometric approach, I conducted a quantitative network analysis and content analysis of 35 peer-reviewed articles published since 2006. The research highlights the diverse range of topics addressed, including health and nutrition policies, food security, and agriculture. 💡 Our findings highlight the multifaceted nature of Food Policy Coherence and Integration research and the importance of selecting methodologies aligned with research objectives. 🔗 You can access the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eFhvCasi 🌍 I extend my gratitude to the special issue editor Davide Marino, my supervisor Antonella Samoggia and all the other authors for their contributions to this field and look forward to fostering further dialogue on this critical topic. It's fascinating how new technologies and innovations are revolutionizing our lives in ways unimaginable 20 years ago. Here is an interesting survey 'Attitudes to cultivated meat across 15 European countries' conducted by YouGov and published last month by the Good Food Institute Europe. The survey assessed attitudes toward cultivated meat across 15 European countries. It involved over 16,000 participants, making it one of the largest surveys of its kind. The survey appears to indicate strong consumer interest and acceptance of cultivated meat across Europe, despite some political resistance in countries like Italy and Hungary. The findings suggest a potential market for cultivated meat, highlighting the importance of consumer choice and transparency in labelling as key factors for its acceptance. Overall, the survey underscores the readiness of many European consumers to embrace cultivated meat, provided it meets safety and regulatory standards. You have to wonder whether the US, UK, and Australia would exhibit similar or even greater acceptance and market readiness for cultivated meat compared to the European countries surveyed. 🇪🇺 The EU Commission rejects the evidence provided by Hungary to justify banning cultivated meat, calling it unnecessary and premature Hungary’s proposed ban aimed to “protect” traditional European food practices, with support from countries like Italy, Austria, and France, which previously pushed similar measures within the EU Agrifish Council. The EU stated that the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is responsible for thoroughly vetting all novel foods before they can be sold across the EU, ensuring consumer safety. The Commission noted that cultivated meat is not yet available in Europe, deeming national bans unnecessary and potentially disruptive to the EU's standardized authorization process. ✉️ Hungry for more updates on biotech-enabled agrifood businesses and breakthroughs?
