Yesterday was Day 2 at the #eec2024 organised by the EIC (Energy Industries Council).
I was honoured to be a on a panel with Ann Johnson of Blaze, Ian Headley of Santander, Fleur Pomeroy and Rebecca Groundwater of the EIC (Energy Industries Council) discussing the investment challenges in the #energytransition. And I learned so much! The discussion quickly pivoted to the issues and challenges faced in the #supplychain and their perspective. After all we often assume that we will be able to get the parts and components we need when we need and want them. Right?
But listening to Ann, it is clear that for some companies, at least, they get to choose who they work with. That there are some supply chain companies being courted by so many different sectors it is a feast of opportunity.
And that means that not everyone, or every project or sector will get the components and services they are banking on.
What was clear is the following:
1. Transactional relationships don't work. The supply chain is looking for more. #partnerships are key to this. Long term partnerships.
2. #collaboration is going to be critical. The supply chain needs clarity on what is needed and when. Properly. Not the current situation where they are being asked for quotes or to supply knowing that projects are being slowed down.
3. If we don't support the supply chain we are simply not going to be able to deliver.
If we in the UK are to meet our #decarbonisation ambitions we need to be listening and acting on messages such as these. We can no longer assume that all the proverbial ducks will simply line up when we need them.
Peace
Kerry-Ann
📣 The European Commission approved today the fourth wave of Important Projects of Common European Interest (#IPCEI) – #Hy2Move, focused on #hydrogenmobility.
Estonia, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Slovakia, and Spain will collectively contribute up to €1.4 billion in #publicfunding, attracting at least €3.3 billion in #privateinvestment.
Eleven companies, with support from SMEs, will work on 13 projects focusing on:
🚌🚚Integrating #hydrogentechnologies into transport, such as #fuelcell vehicle platforms for buses and trucks.
🚢🚅Developing high-performance fuel cell technologies for ships and locomotives.
📦✈Creating next-generation on-board #hydrogenstorage solutions for aircraft.
⛽💧Producing #hydrogen for mobility and transport, particularly for hydrogen refueling stations.
This fourth IPCEI joins the previously notified #Hy2Tech, #Hy2Use, and #Hy2Infra. Together, they are set to raise over €43 billion in public and private funds, supporting more than 120 projects involving almost 100 European companies, many of which are #H2Europe members.
We commend the companies, Member States, and the European Commission for their dedication and collaboration. Swift implementation is crucial to maintain the momentum in scaling up the #hydrogenindustry and combating #climatechange.

Today at the ICM Forum, I got my wish when attending an insightful panel discussion on the challenges to integration Carbon Capture and Utilization technologies in the EU.
Multiple challenges were highlighted regarding the integration of CCU products, such as eFuels. While there are comprehensive demand signals like FuelEU Maritime and RefuelEU Aviation, the European Commission has approached the production side with a Soviet-style mindset, dictating market terms in exhaustive detail—even though the market itself has yet to fully take shape.
In striving for perfection, we’ve jeopardized what’s good, making it almost impossible to deliver the sustainable fuel volumes needed in the coming years. This risks pushing production to regions of the world that are not burdened by overregulation. 🌍✈️⚓️
I think that iIn the new mandate, we must strike a balance between competitiveness and sustainability by enabling CCU from industrial streams. This can be done by expanding the provisions in the RED Delegated Act on GHG methodology, ensuring that near-term projects can continue operating well beyond arbitrary deadlines. 📅💡

Very timely event as the EU faces a critical moment to address the challenges of building resilient, competitive, and decarbonized industries, while ensuring robust support for clean technologies. The EU Bubble says "Decarbonization must not come at the cost of deindustrialization or new dependencies", yet the risks are tangible.
Recent reports by Draghi and Letta highlight the strategic importance of securing the supply of Critical Raw Materials (CRMs), a cornerstone of the 'rebirth' of industrial policies globally as well as my Ph.D. trajectory.
China and the US have long embraced industrial policies, and the EU is catching up with frameworks such as the Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA), the Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (STEP), and the CRM Act. These initiatives mark the beginning of a new industrial chapter for Europe, targeting key sectors like batteries, semiconductors, and CRMs.
In short, do not miss this event! I'll be joining Dear Marc-Antoine Eyl-Mazzega online.
