Today, CALSTART joined Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments IKEA USA Moms Clean Air Force and other local community members and business leaders in South Philadelphia for a Clean Trucks PA Coalition event celebrating Pennsylvania’s progress on sustainable freight while urging Governor Josh Shapiro to finalize rulemaking for the Advanced Clean Trucks (ACT) standards. “The clean truck industry is growing rapidly, and Pennsylvania is poised to benefit,” said Jordan Stutt, CALSTART’s Senior Director for the Northeast Region. “Embracing this emerging industry will bring new jobs, cleaner air, and lower costs to businesses and communities across the state. It’s now crucial for policymakers to support strong programs for accelerated deployment of cleaner trucks.” The event showcased two models of zero-emission trucks—a Peterbilt Motors Company 579EV class 8 tractor truck, courtesy of Hunter Trucks, and a Ford eTransit delivery van, courtesy of IKEA—showing a glimpse into what is currently available on the market today (more than 197 different models of zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles from 72 manufacturers). The UCLA campus is receiving an electric makeover with help from CALSTART. Speaking to the news outlet CoStar News CALSTART’s Vice President and Bus Initiative Lead, Jared Schnader, weighed in on static wireless charging that is part of UCLA ‘s first-in-state electric road system for the school’s new fleet of electric passenger shuttles and heavy-duty buses: “If adopted widely, this innovation could revolutionize transit electrification.” The university is partnering with Electreon a wireless charging company, and CALSTART with funding from the state. These efforts not only support California’s own goals but also serve as a model for other regions to expand their accessibility to clean transportation. California is powering toward its goal of 100% zero-emission vehicle sales by 2035, a critical step in building a sustainable future! The Edison Electric Institute estimates some 9.6 million charge points will be needed in the U.S. by the end of the decade to support an estimated 18.7 million EVs on the road. As of April 2023, there were 136,513 charging ports at 53,764 public and private stations, according to the U.S. Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center. This massive increase in EV charging infrastructure will have important implications for the grid, and present stakeholders with significant challenges - and opportunities. Organized by the Smart Grid Observer, the 6th EV Charging Infrastructure Summit - North America, East, January 28-29, 2025, in Atlanta convenes top industry experts and utility professionals to examine how growing EV adoption rates will impact the network, and what investments are needed to ensure grid stability and benefit. Case studies of current utility programs and deployments will be discussed with an eye toward refining strategies, identifying technologies, and implementing business models that will ensure widespread EV adoption is optimized for all parties involved. Our very own Lead Project Manager of Electric School Buses, Alise Crippen, will speak at this event. Don't miss out. Register today: https://ow.ly/1zOe50UqAAf

This week, the Environmental Protection Agency affirmed states’ authority to implement critical clean cars and trucks programs. In response to the breaking news, CALSTART President and CEO, John Boesel said: “Today’s EPA actions demonstrate the agency’s commitment to partner with states to reduce emissions from all classes of vehicles and engines. The Advanced Clean Cars II and Heavy-Duty Omnibus programs are more than just a California initiative—they represent a nationwide opportunity to modernize our transportation system, stimulate economic growth, and improve public health. As automakers and truck manufacturers ramp up production of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) to meet growing demand, consumers will benefit from increased choices, lower operating costs, and reduced environmental impacts. “States play a vital role in driving technological innovation and environmental protection. More than a dozen states and counting have already adopted these programs, and this waiver will propel emissions reductions from the transportation sector. “CALSTART and its members remain committed to supporting the deployment of ZEVs and the necessary infrastructure to make this transition equitable and accessible to all communities. We stand ready to work alongside states to achieve a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future for generations to come.” This is a nationwide opportunity to modernize our #transportation system and reduce air pollution from combustion engine vehicles across the country while also spurring economic growth and improving public health. Speaking to Public News Service, CALSTART’s Jordan Stutt (Northeast Region Senior Director) underscored how ports can reinvent themselves on the path toward achieving net-zero emissions. Specifically, Jordon discussed how the The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey is receiving more than $347 million in funds from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Clean Ports Program—part of a $3 billion grant—to cut emissions, and how #zeroemission vehicles can help port operations in many ways. "[W]e're going to see everything from electric forklifts and #drayage trucks," said Stutt, "to shore power systems - to help major ships use electricity at ports, instead of burning diesel while they idle there for days." Jordan noted that this $3 billion is going to existing technologies for #ports to reduce emissions. He said the money's other uses will help bolster ports' climate-friendly futures. "Through these investments, we will gather really critical data to help us better understand the benefits of this transition," said Stutt. "It'll help build out the workforce to support deployment and maintenance of all this equipment, and it'll help encourage increased manufacturing of zero-emission equipment."
