This is a must-read study by The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) on the critical importance of #efficiency in #EVs. They even echo our maxim: Not all EVs are born equal. Public charging stations supplemented by intelligent battery storage could help DC fast charging avoid cost spikes and grid stress. Public fast charging stations offer convenient and reliable charging that will help facilitate the transition from ICE to electric vehicles and assuage driver concerns about on-demand access to charging outside their homes. However, at the same time demand for charging at these sites, which could include shopping malls, highway-side convenience stores, grocery store parking lots, and more, will be inherently unpredictable and, if mishandled, could come with costly downsides for drivers, site operators, and utilities. Direct Current Fast Charging (DCFC) is the most practical application for public charging sites but, thanks to its high and concentrated energy demand, it also possesses the greatest risk of upsetting the grid in times of stress. What’s more, a public charging site can never truly account for when charging demand will spike. Take a site at a turnpike rest area with four DCFCs, for example. The days and times when those chargers will see the most activity might follow somewhat predictable overall patterns (i.e. more visits during rush hours, holiday weekends, fewer in the overnight hours) but it’s not an exact science. Each site needs to be prepared to handle the (somewhat unlikely) possibility that four vehicles will arrive simultaneously on a summer afternoon to charge up. When this happens, the local grid will be strained. Peak consumption will likely trigger demand charges for the site operators and, by extension, higher energy prices for the customers. To maximize the upside and minimize the downside of this transition, charging stations – especially public, DC fast charging ones – must integrate intelligent energy storage systems to better manage demand, reduce grid strain and mitigate costs. Conventional behind-the-meter storage is a familiar solution to grid operators and those working on the frontlines of the energy transition. These platforms are helpful in limited cases but cannot address grid woes alone, particularly when faced with scenarios where end-user behaviour may be unpredictable. Just like newer model cars have some automated features but still require someone in the driver’s seat, an added layer of monitoring and control for energy storage is essential to not just monitor but manage demand. AC/DC?: New groundbreaking vehicle to grid EV charging trial uses lower cost technology • Project trials next-generation vehicle to grid charging using AC rather than DC   • AC V2G charger is much lower cost than DC charger   • Technology can help accelerate UK’s transition to net zero A groundbreaking project is now underway to trial vehicle to grid (V2G) electric vehicle (EV) workplace charging using new, lower cost technology. The V2VNY project is exploring the effectiveness of reducing carbon emissions and lowering energy costs by using an AC (alternating current) V2G charger, which is more cost effective for vehicle to grid charging at workplaces and at homes than DC (direct current). The first chargers have now been installed for the V2VNY trial, which aims to demonstrate a commercially viable way for fleet owners, businesses and EV drivers to save money, and for the UK to reduce the load on the electricity grid at peak times. Vehicle to grid charging means that an EV can take power from the grid and also send it back. If an EV is charged when electricity prices are low and then return electricity back to the grid at peak times when prices are high, fleet/building owners can save on electricity costs. The V2VNY project is also trialling sending energy from EVs to buildings and to other vehicles as part of V2X (Vehicle to Everything). Until now V2G has only been possible with EVs featuring CHAdeMO (DC, or high power) charging technology, as featured on the Nissan LEAF. Virtually all of the latest EVs now use CCS (DC) charging technology rather than CHAdeMO; standards exist to ensure CCS technology works with V2G by 2025. However the V2VNY trial is using AC bi-direction rather than DC charging technology, which the innovative charger synchronises with the grid. The AC solution is more efficient at low power and is therefore more suited for the use of V2G in a workplace or domestic setting, as well as meaning much lower costs for a charger. V2G is seen by many industry experts as offering an important way to store energy generated by renewables and then to supply this back to the grid at peak times, to help reduce the UK’s reliance on fossil fuels and to accelerate progress to net zero. There are now over one million EVs on UK roads, with this figure growing every month, providing an ever-increasing quantity of mobile battery storage units. The V2VNY project is being led by Hangar 19, in partnership with CrowdCharge and DriveElectric. CrowdCharge has been running V2G in homes for over three years, with effective results. How do we stop EV cable theft? SBD Automotive knows that the reliability of the nation’s EV charging infrastructure is paramount to accelerating EV adoption. Regrettably we have experienced growing numbers of EV cable theft (presumably for copper) in major cities like Philadelphia, Seattle, and countless others with no easy answers. https://lnkd.in/gBDaiA66 Some ideas: 1. Accelerate CCTV adoption and leverage active deterrents such as setting off an alarm, calling the police, turning on flood lights, etc. 2. Increase advocacy with USA States who receive funding from the NEVI Formula Program to uphold their responsibility to, “implement physical and cybersecurity strategies consistent with their respective State EV Infrastructure Deployment Plans” as well as encourage Federal Requirements for EV network physical security or tamper resistance which do not exist today. 3. Increase copper theft awareness (across multiple industry sectors) to ensure recyclers have ‘proof of origin.' 4. Accelerate the transition from 400V to 800V charging to reduce the amount of necessary copper in the cables for the same charging speed (sounds counter-intuitive but true!) in the first place. 5. Classify EV charging networks as national critical infrastructure allowing tougher federal prosecution (think postal theft!). 6. Ensure deployment and reliability of real-time apps and tools to help drivers find EV charging stations which are operational (even when targeted stations go down) to mitigate a bad experience. 7. Start with 'Why?' – better information sharing among municipalities and law enforcement is needed to quantify the issue and get at the motivations behind these attacks. 8. Make it visible – similar to a sticker: “Our drivers carry less than $20 in cash” to let bad actors know the risks vs. a smaller upside than they believe. The recent adoption of a North American standard for a universal EV charging interface is big news for both EV EV drivers and EV manufacturers. Although there are a few "speed bumps" that will delay full deployment for a year or so, it will effectively double the number of EV charging stations available to the public by allowing non-Tesla vehicles to access Tesla's17,000+facilities, as well as enable Tesla vehicles to charge at any SAE J3400-compliant commercial charging station. ALG, Part of J.D. Power is the standard for residuals in North America. We all know the factors contributing to cratering residual values on EVs, but most recently, battery life and its "real world" usability have come to the forefront. For Tesla, Rivian, Lucid Motors and all OEMs producing BEVs, this could be a game changer, and not in a good way. "64% range vs the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rating when new, in just 3 years" was recently quoted for Teslas. A question we ask...who would buy or lease one?? "A recent study found that Tesla vehicle batteries degrade at a faster rate than the manufacturer’s warranty assures. Recurrent discovered that the range plummeted to 64 percent of the EPA-rated range after three years after combing data from 12,198 Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. While the information illustrates how inaccurate federal testing can be, it also falls short of where even Tesla believes the range should be." We assume other OEMs will see noticeable degradation, but amounts could vary significantly. Should a prospective new BEV buyer believes battery range could decrease to 64% in 3 years, she/he will almost certainly opt out. Potentially a deadly factor for all BEVs. Sharing the battery's health status is a crucial parameter that will significantly impact the #EV ecosystem in the long run. According to CARB's ACC II, manufacturers will be required to display the battery's #health status on the vehicle dashboard starting from Model Year 2026. This move aims to empower #EV owners to make well-informed decisions regarding #battery maintenance and replacement. Moreover, it will instill confidence in those purchasing #EVs from the second-hand market by providing clarity on the remaining battery life and its suitability for their needs. The BMW i3 REX was the first attempt to market an extended-range EV—a BEV with a generator—but it didn’t quite succeed. Can larger EREVs improve both GHG emissions and consumer acceptance while reducing dependence on DC fast charging? The answer may lie beyond technology alone. New policy tools that reflect real-world fleet performance can encourage OEMs to support frequent charging and earn credits when they do. The idea that adopting NACS (now more properly referred to as SAE J3400) was going to solve all the problems of public EV charging reliability was always far-fetched, and I was surprised at the time that so many people bought into it. Now that Tesla appears to be releasing its creation into the wild, reliability and interoperability issues may become more important than ever.
