👉 The ASHRAE International Buildings Decarbonisation Conference 2024 in Madrid is round the corner! I will be there on Thursday 18th presenting our new paper “Occupant-Centric Comfort: A Methodological Breakthrough for Enhanced Energy Savings”. With this novel methodology for enhancing building energy efficiency, my colleagues Federico Cascavilla, Jose Cubillo Capuz, and I argue for a shift from conventional setpoint temperatures to a comfort-driven approach that considers the interplay of occupant activities, external climate, and personalized comfort ranges, which could eventually lead to significant energy reductions. Our methodology integrates dynamic energy modeling techniques with artificial intelligence algorithms. Instead of adhering to preset setpoint temperatures, our models dynamically change the indoor setpoint to target thermal comfort neutrality, exploring the energy implications of this approach. We look forward to sharing our findings at the conference and contributing to the global effort towards a more sustainable built environment. District Heat Networks and Datacentres as circular energy systems - huge potential in Ireland ? Aalborg University have completed at study showing that there is 221TWh of waste heat energy available from European data centres annually ( to put this number in context - this is c. 8 times Ireland's total heat demand at 27TWh annually ) Euroheat & Power are collaborating with the The European Data Centre Association - EUDCA to utilise this waste heat in district heat networks We have started to do this already in Ireland - using waste heat from the Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centre in Tallaght in Dublin to heat adjacent public sector offices and the TU Dublin university campus. see link; https://lnkd.in/dAEpXJUV Energy Sector integration in practice? On Monday, members of The European Data Centre Association - EUDCA & Euroheat & Power took a significant first step towards collaboration. We discussed common challenges and explored ways to work together in order to enhance #energyefficiency and #circularity by capturing more #wasteheat from #datacentres to decarbonise #buildings.    Data centres and #districtheating and cooling networks are both critical infrastructures for the digital and clean transition, with a significant opportunity to achieve #carbonneutrality . We all agreed that there is enormous potential for a win-win situation. However, speeding up projects requires addressing some challenges. 🔍We identified some leads that we will further explore: - Business: reduce negotiation time, identify and replicate successful business models, and create new ones. - Trust & engagement: harness heating and cooling planning, create trust and awareness with real estate developers, and make cooperation more systematic. - Policy and funding: exchange on best practices in EU Member States, identify gaps, set and deliver realistic targets, support investments and mitigate risks. ✨Big thanks to our expert members: we gained more understanding of each other's challenges and business models, and shared insights and ideas. This new collaboration will benefit both industries and contribute to a more sustainable and resilient urban ecosystem. Here is another great example of an innovative solution to make intelligent use of waste heat. A data center in Austria uses its waste heat to heat a neighboring hospital. An underground pipeline connects the data center to the heat pumps of the hospital, in order to generate heating energy. This clever measure is not only environmentally friendly, but also a big step in the direction of energy efficiency. #DataCenter #Technology #Sustainability #Environment #EnergyEfficiency
