New Zealand’s New Plymouth District Council has achieved significant energy and cost reductions through a successful trial of Flygt Adaptive Mixers. Xylem commissioned 2 x Flygt 4220 Adaptive Mixers at the council’s wastewater treatment plant, in directly mirroring positions (to allow for 100% like-for-like comparison), to 2 x conventional single speed mixers previously installed in the bioreactors’ anoxic zone. Over three months, the Flygt Adaptive Mixers were compared to the conventional mixers to understand the potential savings for council. The traditional mixer had annual running costs of NZ$2,706 compared to the Flygt SR4220.010 2.2 kW running cost of NZ$1,308. Ever wonder how a Hydrodynamic Vortex Separator (HDVS) can effectively separate the nuisance grit from a nasty wastewater influent stream? Let’s take a trip down memory lane to where it all started with Hydro International’s founding father, Mr. Bernard Smisson, who designed the very first vortex overflow unit in England in the early 1960s. #OwnYourGrit #HydroInternational #GritManagement #OldcastleInfrastructure #CRH #IPG #HeadCell #GritKing #StormKing #Infrastructure #GritSeparation

Amazing Innovation - Turning waves into electricity The floaters moves up and down due to waves activates hydraulic motor which is connected to electric generators. The unique feature about this system is its very simple mechanism rather than complex offshore setups. They use existing structures like breakwaters, piers, jetties This simplicity makes clean energy more affordable. #waves #floaters #electricity #electricgenerators

This article is the result of a collaboration between two companies, each with their own expertise and viewpoints. Royal HaskoningDHV contributed with far stretching knowledge of the civil engineering challenges of shore power installations, whereas Portwise brought to the table years of experience with terminal design and operations. I'm looking forward to seeing how simulation can assist terminals worldwide with the implementation of shore power. Do you want to know more? Please read the article below and feel free to reach out to me with comments or questions.
The number and design capacity of shore power zones can be reduced by predicting the vessel berthing patterns and demand for shore power connections along the quay, resulting in significant cost savings in electrical infrastructure. Our study, recently done with Royal HaskoningDHV proposes a multi-criteria analysis framework to evaluate the trade-offs between different shore power system configurations, considering various technical, operational, and commercial aspects. Our study also shows that the optimal number of shore power zones depends on the terminal's specific characteristics and preferences. We’ve developed tooling “Optimising shore power through berth simulations” to be effectively used for studying and determining the optimum shore power system configuration.
