  • Looking back on our end-of-year event in Brazil! We’re pleased to share some key takeaways from our recent end-of-year event in São Paulo, Brazil. It was an opportunity to exchange knowledge and insights on automation and sustainability within our industry. It was great to see so many industry professionals come together for open and honest discussions. The conversations were focused, practical, and driven by shared experiences on topics that matter most to our field. Key points included: 🔹 Challenges of implementing terminal automation — Implementation isn’t straightforward. We discussed common hurdles and strategies to overcome them. 🔹 How to successfully implement terminal automation — Success lies in getting the details right. We explored best practices that help ensure smooth execution. 🔹 The path to sustainable operations — Sustainability is a priority for terminals and authorities. We looked at how automation and electrification can support a more sustainable approach. A big thank you to everyone who attended and participated in the event. Events like these help us stay ahead of industry developments and continue to refine our approach to automation and sustainability. We’re taking these insights with us into 2025 as we continue to support sustainable, more efficient and smarter terminals. #Portwise #Automation #Sustainability #terminals #logistics

  • The publications of the 3 workstreams by Zero Emission Port Alliance (ZEPA) are available online! The 3 publications focus on demand, voluntary standards respectively port power infrastructure. At Portwise, we very much appreciate this initiative by industry players such as APM Terminals and DP World to explore ways to accelerate #port #decarbonisation. We were provided the opportunity to contribute to these publications. They deliver great context and they provide direction for the port community. It is also clear from the publications that many steps are still to be taken. At Portwise, we look forward continuing playing our role in furthering ideas and techologies that work towards port decarbonisation.

  • Terminal electrification is high on the agenda of ports and container terminals. To assist ports in achieving their goals, Portwise has developed a terminal electrification solution approach. A key aspect of terminal electrification involves transitioning to electric equipment. Portwise employs a comprehensive, data-driven improvement approach to evaluate and optimise electric terminal equipment to its fullest potential. This is particularly crucial as electric equipment poses more challenges than for example diesel vehicles. We offer support through simulation analyses to help make better-informed decisions by investigating in-depth scenarios. These simulations provide insight into terminal performance for various scenarios, including testing different electric equipment types, fleet sizes, vehicle battery sizes, shore power installations, layout and infrastructure possibilities. The video shows an example of simulation for battery driven AGVs with charging actions. #electrification #terminals #equipment #simulation #ports https://lnkd.in/ejASMKft

  • The road to carbon zero is not just as simple as buying electric equipment Becoming carbon neutral is one of the main challenges in the maritime industries for the next decades. To achieve that, electrifying equipment is surely an important path (if not the most relevant). The still bumpy road to carbon zero calls for action of more in-depth investigations for insights into many of the questions the industry has. We at Portwise firmly believe that the way to approach these is questions is to simulate via detailed and dynamic modelling that allows us to: - Tailor the operation scenarios and conditions according to each terminal’s unique characteristics and situations. - Implement various battery solutions and charging strategies in a virtual environment without commitment and interference to existing operations. - Measure vehicle power usage per move depending on vehicle types as well as dynamic operational variables of container load, speed, acceleration, and possible energy feedback from deceleration. - Monitor battery status and power consumption over time as per real-life operations in various situations – peak hours, average over shifts, etc. The outcomes from the simulation analyses then further enables possibilities to: - Quantify the impacts of various battery solutions and charging strategies on terminal performance and equipment productivities. - Decide upon the requirements of equipment type, fleet size requirements and vehicle battery size. - Determine the demands on the layout and infrastructure for e.g. charger numbers and locations, and power grid supply. - Find the optimal charging strategies meeting each terminal’s own specific conditions and needs. - Factor into CAPEX/OPEX financial analyses and business case assessments for informed decision-makings. - And provide inputs to execute responsibilities of ESG reporting and sustainable agenda. • Portwise has detailed models that allow us to measure energy consumption for all equipment, electric and conventional fuels. Portwise terminal models use kinematic equipment specifications with acceleration, deceleration, and conflict avoidance and consider load dependency and even the impact of wind. Suppliers of the equipment can provide information on energy consumption. Combined, it’s a powerful way to get insights into the main drivers behind energy efficiency. Read more in this article.

  • What is container terminal simulation? In today’s unpredictable and changing world, container terminals are constantly being challenged with larger volumes of cargo under strict timelines and efficiency standards, and uncertainty on the future. Terminal operators face substantial strategic and operational challenges such as how to cope with the increasing vessel size, how to handle the environmental needs and the electrification of our ports, how to keep up with the automation at terminals and in the port industry, or how many equipment is necessary to meet the expected throughput. Simulation helps to tackle these challenges by allowing operators to test potential scenarios in a virtual environment, to explore impacts and identify bottlenecks. This, in turn, supports more informed decision-making without costly or disruptive real-world testing. Terminal decarbonisation typically requires significant investments and involves making crucial decisions. Expecially since operators of container terminals often aim to achieve specific emission goals for various reasons, including customer expectations, laws and regulations imposed by port authorities, or environmental concerns. At Portwise we're at the forefront of modelling energy consumption to reduce emissions. Our advanced energy scan forms the basis for analysing energy transitions and initiating action plans. Understanding the vital connection between emission reduction and efficiency gains, Portwise’s approach goes beyond the existing on-premise terminal operation and extends to energy sourcing and adopting modern equipment, paving the way for a greener future in port management globally.
