Why do people stay silent? It’s one week to go until my talk “Silence isn’t golden: how psychological safety is fundamental to high performing teams”. If you’re a tech leader able to be in Leeds next Thursday 30th May then it would be great to see you at the WRK digital Software Engineering Leadership event which is being held in the fantastic Glean office at Leeds Dock. The event link to sign up is: https://lnkd.in/eazXcRXQ Obviously without wanting to give away too many spoilers 😉 here’s a few reasons why a lack of psychological safety might mean people stay silent: -> They fear looking silly -> They’re in a lower status role than others -> They think they should already know it and don’t want to be found out -> They’ve had past experiences of being humiliated -> They think someone else will say it -> They think someone else has said it -> They’ve been spoken over so many times they’ve given up -> They’ve been ignored already -> Staying silent costs them nothing I’m hoping to do an exercise at the event next week to make a much bigger list with everyone’s input 😀 But if you’d like to add some reasons here… What have I missed?

Being a CTO sucks. But not for the reasons you think 🤔 It sucks for almost everyone who should be a CTO, because you need to stop doing what you're good at. 🛠️ From Doing to Leading ⤷ You need to make a MASSIVE adjustment ⤷ Before, you measured your value in delivered features, written code, solved problems. ⤷ After, you need to lead the company in technical direction And if you don't adapt, you become the BOTTLENECK. But don't just take my word for it. ⭐ Alan Williamson poured his decades of experience with/as CTO into his latest book "Think Like a CTO", that I can't recommend enough. ............... ♻️ Repost if this resonated. TLDR? Come to LeadingEng London on 13 June. Comment for a chance to win one of three complimentary tickets 🎫🎟️🎫 ~~~ Super excited to be hosting LeadingEng London https://lnkd.in/e9qA589x - a one-day interactive programme on 13 June 2024 with https://leaddev.com/. A curated event halfway between a conference and a workshop for engineering Heads, Directors, VPs and CTOs. We know it’s difficult to find time to focus on personal development and how isolating it can feel. LeadingEng is a unique event designed to help you meet other senior leaders, to discuss common challenges and discover ways to drive results and impact in your teams and organisation. The programme is a powerful combination of interactive sessions and guided discussion. There is a curated roundtable seating plan, where you are brought together with leaders from similar organisations to yours, to help you build and expand your peer network. How it works The programme is split into four sessions that explore essential areas you should be focusing on as a senior engineering leader: • Your business: Developing commercial awareness to drive business outcomes • Your delivery: Driving pace and delivering high-impact projects • Your strategy: Crafting an effective technical strategy and getting buy-in • Your people: Structuring and developing your teams https://lnkd.in/eeiithA6 to find out more. We also of course continue to run https://lnkd.in/eBtgNjGE for your Engineering Managers and Tech Leads, and https://lnkd.in/e6Cwiqj5 for very senior individual contributors. I hope to see you there! If your company can’t afford to send you right now and you’re keen to come (or know someone who might be) please comment — as the host I have 3 complimentary tickets I’ll give away 🤩🤩🤩

You can’t put a price tag on great partners and when collaboration, built on trust and transparency, feels more like a shared mission, magic happens. "Very has been excellent, and we’ve never had an issue with deadlines. There’s always constant communication, and they’re fully transparent about the work they’re doing." – Paul Scott, Former Director of ASME There’s no greater compliment we could receive than that. We're proud to be part of initiatives that drive positive change and empower organizations to achieve their goals. I absolutely love the Barrett methodology, especially the Cultural Entropy score, which measures dysfunction in an organization. From my first encounter with it, I knew it was a game-changer! 🙌 I've been using the Barrett method in my culture transformation projects for the past 15 years, and I can say firsthand how well it resonates with Executive Teams. The measurable outcomes and reports bring objectivity to the table, making things tangible for business decisions. #CultureTransformation #BarrettMethodology #CulturalEntropy #MeasureWhatMatters #BusinessImpact
Can you measure dysfunction in an organisation? We can with our proprietary Cultural Entropy score. The Cultural Entropy score reveals the degree of dysfunction (friction and frustration) in an organization that is generated by the self-serving, fear-based actions of its leaders. As the Cultural Entropy score increases, the level of trust and internal cohesion decreases. Learn more: https://loom.ly/Ip_KfNs

'know thy self' .... Socrates was onto something here, and it's never been more important in the modern world of leadership. And using Openmind is our go-to tool to get to the heart of the matter quickly, accurately and effectively. But here's the deal: to truly understand yourself, you've got to be open to what you might discover and it's not always an easy read. But for those willing to take the plunge, it's a total game changer. Think about it - we're all unique, just like our fingerprints. That's why those 'one size fits all' approaches to training and coaching in business often fall flat. We're not about quick fixes. We're in it for the long haul, driving lasting change that benefits both the business and its people. But here's the kicker: it all starts with the truth. That's our bread and butter. We dig deep to uncover how your people really feel, not just what they say. It's this insight that allows us to design programs that hit the nail on the head, specifically designed for your business. Ready to open your mind and unlock your team's full potential? Let's chat!
