We've just launched our latest link in the city’s expanding walking, wheeling and cycling network! Thanks to everyone who joined us to celebrate, including the local community, Dalry Primary and Tynecastle High pupils, walkers, cyclists and our partners at Sustrans Scotland and Scottish Government. It was fantastic to see so many people out enjoying a stroll, dog walk, cycle or run as soon as it opened. Providing a completely new, green connection from Roseburn to the West Approach Road and Fountainbridge, the route runs through previously under used land, offering safer and easier green travel options and play areas in the heart of the Dalry community. As well as two new bridges, one of which runs over the railway line with great views of passing trains, Dalry Community Play Park was completely updated with facilities for both younger and older children. This was designed with the help of Dalry Primary School pupils. https://lnkd.in/e5JdZmvw

There has never been a better time to start biking in Toronto. For distances under 5km biking is the fastest, most affordable and sustainable way to get around. The City of Toronto's Cycling and Pedestrian Unit, under Becky Katz's leadership has paved the way for implementing best in class examples of cycling infrastructure that is slowing transforming our city. #BikeShareToronto demonstrates that there is a huge demand for affordable bike rental (especially for those without access to secure bike parking). Despite these achievements in making Toronto a better biking city, we have a growing public health crisis unfolding on our streets. Traffic collisions, caused by distracted and dangerous driving, have led to 32 human deaths on our streets (7 of them being people riding bikes) in 2024. As the city seeks to expand its network of Complete Streets, the calls from folks to stall and prevent the implementation of safe infrastructure is growing and is increasingly becoming a barrier to making progress. Please support the work of Cycle Toronto by supporting our annual fundraiser The Big Toronto Bike Ride. Biking shouldn't be a healthy way to die. https://lnkd.in/gsxEakYu

New government, new path (or should that be new cycle path?) I look forward to seeing how this plays out and hopefully help shape the way forward. BYCS #BicycleMayor #activetravel
Following the official opening of this Parliament with the King’s Speech, Cycling UK has given its response to the proposed bills and measures which will have a direct impact on cycling 👑🚲 Our director of external affairs, Sarah McMonagle, said: “In today’s King’s Speech the government has presented a promising plan for the future of transport in this country. Commitments made to get Britain building have the power to enhance economic growth, improve public health, and help us meet our climate targets. However, this progress is contingent on ensuring that investments include the development of walking and cycling infrastructure from the get-go. “We are encouraged by the prospect of increased local decision-making and see it as an opportunity to grant local leaders in England more authority to implement transport improvements in their communities. We will push the Government to pair this with increased investment in active travel, to ensure the huge benefits of cycling, for our health, our economy and our environment, are realised.” Keep up to date with all our latest work: https://www.cyclinguk.org #KingsSpeech #Parliament #ParliamentOpening #OpeningOfParliament

We want to have New Earswick Pool as our home for swimming lessons (& more) for a long time to come so we are really excited that the plans (that our Louise got a sneaky peek at a couple of months ago) have now been submitted for approval!! FoNESP have drawn up ambitious plans to totally transform the building which includes: 🏗 Demolition of the existing changing rooms & spectator gallery. 🏗 Creation of a mixed sex community changing village with cubicles. 🏗 Relocation of the spectator gallery to the first floor, accessible by lift & stairs. 🏗 Installation of solar panels, battery back-up & an air heat pump to reduce energy costs & make the pool more sustainable to run! The plans can be viewed on the CoYC planning portal – click here for full details: 🌐 https://lnkd.in/eJVUpB7Y It's really important that the cyc planning committee see the value of this upgrade to the users & wider comminuty, so please let them know before the consultation deadline (26th August) ... and if could tag (&/or let) your friends (know) and ask them to do the same we (& the Friends of New Earswick Swimming Pool) would be very grateful. Thank-you in advance for your support! ............................. Additional Info From FoNESP: WE NEED THE HELP OF ALL OUR FRIENDS, SUPPORTERS AND SWIMMERS PAST & PRESENT. FoNESP have submitted a planning application to City of York Council (CoYC) for a total redevelopment of the pool building which is is now 57 years old and in desperate need of modernisation. If we don’t take action, then it’s unlikely to last another 5-10 years. PLEASE GIVE YOUR SUPPORT by letting CoYC know just how much the pool means to you. You can do this on their online portal or via email or by post – full guidance on how to add your support can be found here: 🌐 https://lnkd.in/eRxUkiRb ✍️ If you are responding by email or post please quote the application reference number 24/01298/FUL #SwimSchool #SwimmingPool #Swimming #SupportLocal #SupportLocalBusinesses #SupportSmallBusinesses #Charity #York #NewEarswick

The APPGCW #inquiry focus is on evidence from groups who are currently excluded from #active #travel. It will investigate actions and #policies that can (bunny) hop those barriers. #wheel #walk #scoot #micromobility
The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Cycling and Walking (APPGCW) has launched an inquiry to investigate social justice in active travel. The inquiry will explore the barriers that prevent equal access to walking, cycling and wheeling. ''By actively engaging a diverse range of voices and drawing on real-world examples and successful initiatives, the APPGCW aims to generate insights that are grounded in lived experience and best practices,” Fabian Hamilton, MP for Leeds North East and Co-Chair of the APPGCW told Zag Daily. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is demanding approximately $750,000 annually from the New York Road Runners (NYRR), the organizers of the New York City Marathon, to compensate for the toll revenue lost when the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, North America's longest suspension bridge, is closed to vehicle traffic during the marathon. This financial demand arises as the MTA faces budget strains due to decreased post-pandemic commuter traffic. The NYRR has not yet agreed to this payment, leading to a standoff where the MTA threatened to limit runners to the bridge's lower deck, a move that could impact the number of race participants or extend the race duration. This issue is not unique to the NYRR, as the MTA has also targeted Bike New York with similar demands, threatening the organization's ability to use the bridge for its Five Boro Bike Tour. The MTA's stance is rooted in a broader financial recovery strategy but has sparked debate over the implications for community events and organizations that rely on these iconic city landmarks. The NYRR argues that the marathon is a significant event for New York City, attracting over a million spectators and providing substantial economic benefits, while also emphasizing the event's role in boosting subway ridership. On the other hand, the MTA, while recognizing the marathon's benefits, emphasizes the need for fiscal responsibility and equitable funding for the city's transportation infrastructure. Critics of the MTA's approach argue that such financial demands are shortsighted and undermine the communal and cultural value of these events, while supporters believe it is a necessary step for the MTA's financial sustainability. This dispute reflects broader tensions between the need for public entities to secure funding and the desire to preserve and support community events that enrich the city's cultural landscape and provide essential services and activities for its residents. #NYCMarathon #MTA #VerrazzanoBridge #NewYorkRoadRunners #BikeNewYork #NYCEvents #PublicTransportFunding #CommunityImpact #CityCulture #MarathonDispute #BridgeTollControversy

Feature - Making a Splash “There were times when I felt like I’d hit a roadblock, but Tony was always there, providing pearls of wisdom and, at other times, acting a little like an agony aunt.” When Phil Groom, founder and director of Nemo Swimming and SwimNE, the two-time Swim England swim school of the year, looked to expand by opening his own PaddlePod-branded venues, he turned to the RTC North-delivered Scaleup North East programme and the expert counsel of Tony Brooks, who Phil is quick to credit for his practical advice and unstinting encouragement. Now with three purpose-built PaddlePod sites in Killingworth, Shiremoor and Whitley Bay, which welcome more than 4000 swimmers each week, Phil has continued to diversify his offer, adding cafés, play areas, activity and sensory rooms, as well as plans for a day care nursery at their Killingworth venue, again following Tony’s recommendation. Read more about Phil’s journey and the support he has received from Scaleup North East, as PaddlePod is primed to continue its growth and inspire the next generation to swim for life: https://lnkd.in/eTAShAkz The Scaleup North East programme is funded by the Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, with the The North East Combined Authority acting as lead organisation and RTC North operating as delivery partner. #sponsored #NET #northeasttimes #SwimNE #NemoSwimming #PaddlePod #RTCNorth #swimminglessons #businessgrowth #guidance #support #diversification #drivingconversations #makingconnections
