The UK's cycling charity, enabling and inspiring more people to cycle more often since 1878.

About us

We are Cycling UK. We are the oldest, national cycling charity and have been looking after cyclists since 1878. Throughout the years we've championed a simple belief - that cycling is a wonderful gift that should remain accessible and available to all. Today we remain the nation’s voice for cycling and the strongest force for progressive change. Our vision is of a happier, healthier and cleaner world because more people cycle. We encourage all types of cycling, on and off road. We support you if you already ride, or would like to ride, to work or school, for health, touring, sport and leisure – or just because it’s fun. We’ve been working for cycling for over a century. Nationally and locally, we use our knowledge to influence decision makers, campaign for change and help people discover how cycling can change lives. ■We support individuals and communities. ■We protect cyclists’ interests. ■We campaign to make cycling mainstream and to remove the things that stop people cycling. ■We help people develop the confidence and skills to cycle. ■We promote the benefits of cycling to individuals, to society and to the economy. Cycling UK is a charity, and relies on members, volunteers, grant funders and partners for support. Without them, we would not be able to do our vital work in communities inspiring hundreds of thousands of people across the UK to cycle.

  • 🏰 New Route Alert! We’re excited to introduce Marcher Castles Way, a 291km, 5,000m+ ascent, multi-day adventure that starts in Shrewsbury and winds through the counties of Shropshire, Herefordshire, and Powys (Wales). While it may not feature the towering peaks of Traws Eryri or the length of the Great North Trail, Marcher Castles Way brings its own unique tests. From Roman ruins at Wroxeter to the industrial heritage of Ironbridge, the route leads you through historic landmarks and breathtaking scenery. As you tackle the rolling hills and gradual climbs, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views from Wenlock Edge to the Clee Hills. If you're not ready for the full route, there’s a shorter taster loop—a 97km, 1,300m+ ascent—starting in Shrewsbury. This loop curtails the route by linking Much Wenlock and Church Stretton, making it a perfect introduction to the full Marcher Castles experience before returning to Shrewsbury. Set your daily goals, embrace the challenge, and explore historic castles and quiet countryside at your own pace. 🔗 Ready to ride into history? • 🚴♀️ Cycling for all: How to overcome challenges and inspire change 🚴♂️ Did you know that while 94% of adults in England have learned to ride a bike, cycling accounts for just 2% of all journeys? The interest is there - 43% of people want to cycle more, and 57% support more cycle lanes. But something is holding people back. At Cycling UK, we’re tackling these barriers head-on. We work hard to lobby for space to cycle safely. From safety concerns to confidence building, our behaviour change projects are making cycling more accessible, enjoyable, and sustainable for communities across the UK. Through our behaviour change initiatives, we help people: ✅ Discover safer routes ✅ Build confidence in their cycling skills ✅ Make cycling part of their everyday lives ✅ Here’s what one participant shared: "Cycling used to intimidate me, but through Big Bike Revival, I’ve gained the confidence to cycle every week, visit friends, and even do the school run." By addressing challenges like bad weather and access to resources, our projects support over 100,000 people a year to experience how cycling can work for them. 🚲 Curious about how we’re driving change? 🚴♀️ Cycling into a healthier, happier, and greener future in Aberdeenshire 🌍💚 This week, we celebrated the incredible impact of the Aberdeenshire Bothy and Cycle Access Fund (CAF) at an inspiring event at Newton Dee Camphill Community. Local residents, leaders, and partners came together to reflect on how these programmes are transforming the way people travel and connect across the region. Since 2019, the Aberdeenshire Bothy has empowered over 5,000 participants with cycling skills, confidence, and community rides. In 2023, it won the Scottish Transport Award for Excellence in Walking, Public Realm, and Cycling. The Cycle Access Fund (CAF), launched in 2024, has further expanded access to bikes, repairs, and shared-use cycles, making cycling more affordable and inclusive for people across the northeast. 🌟 Highlights: ✔️ Over £108,000 in grants awarded. ✔️ 75 bikes provided to those facing financial challenges. ✔️ Hundreds of activities and rides encouraging healthier, greener lifestyles. 💬 Hear from participants: “The rides have made cycling an enjoyable and regular part of my week.” – Jim, 70. “Thanks to this scheme, I’m now commuting by bike, saving money and enjoying the fresh air.” – Gordon. 👉 Read more about the impact of these transformative programmes here: https://lnkd.in/gsNvfa67

  • Yesterday's Westminster Hall debate on rural cycling infrastructure, tabled by Freddie van Mierlo MP, showcased an encouraging cross-party commitment to advancing cycling in rural areas. At Cycling UK, we were pleased to provide a briefing to a selection of MPs ahead of the debate. It was fantastic to hear several MPs acknowledge the critical points we raised: ✅ The impressive return on investment cycling infrastructure brings to the wider economy. ✅ The substantial health and environmental benefits of getting more people on bikes. Minister Simon Lightwood announced that the government will reveal active travel funding plans for future years next year. We will continue to lobby government to try and make this funding substantial and meaningful. Thank you to all who participated in this important conversation. Together, we can pave the way for a greener, healthier and more connected future 🌱🚲 #CyclingInfrastructure #ActiveTravel #Sustainability #HealthierCommunities

  • Yesterday's Welsh government budget announcement raises serious concerns for cycling. As Gwenda Owen, our Wales advocacy lead, said: "It’s concerning to see a lack of clarity in the Budget regarding funding for active travel. Without clear direction from the government on the future of walking and cycling, there is a real risk that Wales’ ground-breaking commitments to active travel could be undermined." 🌍 Active travel is key to tackling the climate crisis, improving public health and providing real transport choices. Without proper investment, Wales risks backpedalling on its commitments. ⏳ The budget will be voted on in February 2025. Take a few seconds to write to your MSs and urge them to save funding for cycling. 🖊️ Take action today: https://lnkd.in/gz33g-uB Let’s protect Wales’ future by cycle! 🚴♂️ #ActiveTravel #CyclingUK #SustainableTransport #Welshbudget

  • 🚴♀️ After years of growth in Scotland’s active travel budget, progress has stalled. The Scottish Government has slashed £31m from next year’s funding for cycling, walking and wheeling, keeping investment stuck at approximately the same level for three years. This cut undermines years of momentum towards safer streets and greener transport, despite 79% of Scots wanting more cycle lanes and traffic-free routes. It also risks worsening Scotland’s rising climate emissions and health crisis. Let’s get progress back on track. Use our quick e-action tool to email your MSPs today. Urge them to oppose these cuts and demand the government keeps its promises to build a healthier, greener future. 📖 Read more on our blog and join us in calling for renewed investment in active travel. Together, we can reverse these stalled efforts. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/esNXgf48 #ActiveTravel #CyclingUK
