Broadly agree with Karthik Muralidharan in this part of his book on Accelerating India's Development but also want to bring a bit of nuance to it based on how we look at it at SauraMandala Foundation | Centre for Accelerated Development Using philanthropic capital to only improve the efficiency of public spending and finance in my opinion is a slightly futile exercise, since the design of the schemes /plans for public spending itself are very disconnected from the ground realities. It very quickly becomes the case of mopping the floor with the pipes leaking. A good example of this is all the philanthropic effort that's gone into putting more investments and people into aspirational districts resulting in throwing more people at the problem and not too many systemic changes. What I instead believe should happen is the use of philanthropic capital towards identifying root causes and designing pilots for eventual policy level pilots and hence de-risking iteration for the public system and also allowing ground up solutions to emerge. post which it can be scaled by policy and philanthropy should continue to play a role to support scale up and institutionalisation into the system hence ending up with better capacity in the state. This is more of an effort to fix the pipes but it takes longer as we need to find the exact places it's leaking in.

Do you know that universities like Amity, Manipal, BITS Pilani, and even NITs and IITs are classified as "Non-Profit" in India? Sounds noble, right? "Non-profit" status conjures images of low-cost education, generous scholarships, and institutions that are driven by a mission to serve society. But when you dig a little deeper, the "non-profit" education system in India looks more like a high-revenue corporate enterprise wrapped in the protective blanket of tax benefits. Let's break down the reality: Private colleges and universities, though technically classified as "charitable institutions," charge fees that make your jaw drop. And they are growing faster than the public sector – private higher education is expanding 5x faster than public universities. BITS Pilani: In 2007, the fee for a B.Tech course was around ₹2 lakh. Fast forward to 2024, and that same degree costs ₹19.6 lakh – almost a 10x increase in 17 years. That’s an annual fee increase rate of over 15%! Is this what “charity” looks like? Because if so, then maybe we’re redefining what charity means. Manipal University (MBBS): MBBS tuition fees were ₹19 lakh in 2012. In 2024? Brace yourself – ₹70.9 lakh! That’s almost 4x in just over a decade. So, we have a “non-profit” college here charging fees so high that only a fraction of the population can afford it without loans or savings. At the end I must say, If these institutions are truly “charitable” organizations, maybe it’s time for a transparent look into their finances and operational structures. 🌟 𝗠𝘆 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗮𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🌟 The Dakshana Foundation founded by Mohnish Pabrai has a profound mission: to empower underprivileged students in India by providing them with the resources and support to gain admission into some of the world’s most competitive institutions, including the IITs. By offering intensive coaching and guidance, Dakshana Foundation transforms talented but under-resourced students into future engineers, scientists, and leaders who go on to make a significant impact. This cause resonates deeply with me, which is why I’ve decided to donate all proceeds from my book on value investing to Dakshana. Education has the power to break the cycle of poverty and open doors to opportunities that many can only dream of. The work Dakshana does is nothing short of life-changing, and it’s a testament to the vision and generosity of Mohnish Pabrai (Meeting him in Omaha last year was like a dream come true). One Charlie Munger’s first anniversary, it only seems right to use his words — “The best thing a human being can do is to help another human being know more.” Both of them have greatly praised the work Mohnish sir does at Dakshana as well. I’ve also been inspired by William Green whose philosophy of purposeful living has left a lasting impression on me. His insights remind us that true success lies not just in personal achievements but in contributing to a greater good.
