Did shopper marketing, suddenly die? Can’t move for retail media posts or predictions delivered on the hour (in case you hadn’t noticed…). But from the decks I’ve seen from a handful of networks (and a couple of major players), it’s all very format driven. By that, that precious data they want to exploit still essentially fills prescribed ad units across their estate (or beyond it). There is little application of the science; how consumers actually navigate their estate, and how you exploit THAT. Old school shopper marketing. Totally get for established brands out there, retail media in its current guise will almost certainly do a banging job. For the rest mind, aren’t retailers maybe missing a trick? Might be an idea to employ some shopper marketing expertise for those conversations lower down the chain…. Been having a lot of conversations lately with retailers who are just embarking on their retail media journeys - and the questions always come back to; 1. What’s the size of the prize; 2. How do we go after over and above marketing budgets without impacting our trade marketing; and 3. Where to begin? My thoughts; budget constraints are a daily reality in marketing - requiring careful allocation and prioritisation of resources. Media channels must prove their worth and deliver on their promises, and retail media must offer a distinct and valued proposition to stand out in the market. If you're a retailer with a retail media network, or if you’re looking to get started, here's what you should consider: - Innovate across online, offsite, and in-store channels, especially the latter. - Clearly define your differentiation: Is it your audience, ad units, or data offerings? Marketers need clear reasons to invest in your channel. This is an assessment framework that I’ve found really helpful for retailers to begin mapping out their networks and assets to start to define where the gaps, opportunities and value sit.
