British grocery price #inflation has also fallen for the fifteenth month in a row to 2.4%, the lowest level since October 2021 and 15% points lower than this time last year, whilst sales rose by 2.9% over the four weeks to 12 May. Grocery price inflation is gradually returning to what we would consider more normal levels. It’s now sitting only 0.8 percentage points higher than the 10-year average of 1.6% between 2012 and 2021, which is just before prices began to climb. Typically, an inflation rate of around 3% is when we start to see marked changes in consumers’ behaviour, with shoppers trading down to cheaper items when the rate goes above this line and vice versa when the rate drops. However, after nearly two and a half years of rapidly rising prices, it could take a bit longer for shoppers to unwind the habits they have learnt to help them manage the cost of living crisis. This is great. Because the proposition is somehow magical — it’s a complicated thing, with lots of words and concepts people don’t even want to hear. It makes our (my) heads hurt. But this is very simply said: connect knowledge, make it easy to access, and your business will be transformed. Because these are problems every client I’ve ever talked to has, but they never know how to solve. How do I connect these pipes? Whose problem is it? Where do I start? What if insights from different data sets disagree? Because the team responsible for solving these problems and delivering these solutions is plain awesome. Human, fun, experts. Data magicians who speak the same language as you and me and can crack a joke in between. This is fucking great. Can’t wait to work more with you Matthew and Tom!

With the upcoming long bank holiday weekend approaching, many of us will be enjoying delicious meals prepared by friends and family. But amidst the festivities, it's important to consider the potential risks of harmful bacteria lurking in our kitchens. Ipsos UK recently conducted a survey to explore Brits' habits and beliefs around food hygiene. Shockingly, 4 in 10 people admitted to using the same tea towel for multiple purposes, neglecting the advice of the Food Standards Agency. Other concerning practices include checking phones while cooking (36%) and storing leftover food in open containers in the fridge (19%). Despite the FSA warning about the dangers of slowly chilling food, 6 in 10 respondents believed it was safer to let food cool to room temperature before refrigerating it. The survey also uncovered misconceptions about freezing food, eating food off the floor, and washing chicken before cooking. Ipsos researcher Federica Curcurú highlighted the disconnect between knowledge and actions when it comes to food hygiene. While most may get away with these habits, the reality is that over 2.4 million cases of food poisoning occur in the UK each year according to the FSA. The survey serves as a reminder of the importance of debunking common myths and practicing good food hygiene. April has followed the trend observed in the first Quarter of 2024 of flatlining consumer confidence, meaning the UK continues to have sluggish prospects for growth due to weak consumer activity. Whilst a slight uptick was observed in some retail activity during April, this was small and due to Easter Holidays rather than a fundamental shift in consumer attitudes. This pattern of stagnating growth in 2024 is driven by the spending power of UK consumers which continues to be challenged. Despite significant reductions in the rate of inflation it is still above the average for the past 10 years and is likely to mean the expected cut in interest rates will be postponed until the autumn of 2024, further weakening growth prospects. The UK Maru Household Index provides an overall view across questions – it paints the same picture of a better position than a year ago, but still more households feeling pessimistic rather than optimistic and this remaining stubbornly consistent during 2024. Latest #grocerymarketshare data from Worldpanel by Kantar shows Britain’s biggest supermarket Tesco achieved its largest share since December 2017. It now takes 28.0% of the market, up from 27.4% one year ago. Sainsbury's sales increased by 5.1%, with its market share stepping up 0.4 percentage points to 15.2%. Ocado Retail was the fastest growing grocer for the eighth month running, pushing its sales up by 10.0% over the latest 12 weeks. The #ecommerce specialist’s market share grew by 0.1 percentage points to 1.8%. The overall #online market expanded by 3.5% over the 12 weeks, now worth £3.7 billion, with 22.1% of households shopping online. So after hinting a couple of months ago that confidence was fragile because positive momentum was so tentative (and there remained real day to day challenges even with inflation decelerating), September brought a significant -7 drop. Despite grocery price #inflation easing back to 1.7% over the last four weeks, financial confidence hasn’t risen with it. Memories of the last two years remain strong, with nearly 60% of shoppers still very or extremely concerned about rising grocery prices. In GB, take-home sales at the grocers rose by 3.0% over the four weeks to 1 September compared with one year ago. Ocado Group was the fastest growing grocer for the seventh month in a row, delivering its quickest rate of growth since May 2021 with sales up by 12.9%. With the recent headline inflation numbers looking solid, and retail sales returning to growth in May after the April slump, you have to wonder whether the positive streak for confidence will continue next month, even with the Tory narrative of "see, you can trust us with the economy" feeling more than just a little out of touch (and unlikely to be enough to get them back in power). Consumers do like certainty, and this week's BoE hold reinforces that, with fears of worse mortgage pain to come undoubtedly quelled. But brands and retailers should be careful not to equate this result with people feeling positive overall - it is more like they are less negative. There remains a long way to go I suspect before consumers will be happy to spend more freely again, with the major purchase index barely changed from 12 months ago at minus 23. High interest rates makes savings an appealing place to put any spare money, so as long as interest rates remain high, consumers with debt and consumers without will respectively have barriers and motivating drivers to keep hold of their money.
