Community legal centres are at breaking point. Due to a national funding crisis, centres are turning away people in crisis. We are asking the Federal Government to invest in a society where access to legal advice and the justice system is based on need and not based on the size of your bank balance. The Commonwealth Government should increase funding to local community legal services by at least 125 million dollars annually in the 2024 Budget to ensure centres can keep their doors open, support their staff, and begin to address high and increasing levels of unmet demand in their communities. #CommunityLaw #FundEqualJustice Community Legal Centres Australia Community Legal Centres Queensland Mark Dreyfus Jim Chalmers Katy Gallagher Amanda Rishworth

When hundreds of community legal services around Australia who give FREE help to thousands of people each month are in strife, once again it will be people in financial distress, in violent and controlling relationships and who are homeless, most affected. To add to this challenge, our sector is also struggling to retain trained, experienced and passionate staff— the lifeblood of this important work. We are calling for additional investment in legal assistance as part of a comprehensive response to meet the justice needs of people across the country (in line with the NLAP Review findings). This will require a much larger Commonwealth contribution to all legal assistance providers under the next NLAP including at least an additional $125 million a year for community legal centres. #CommunityLaw #FundEqualJustice Mark Dreyfus Jim Chalmers Katy Gallagher Mark Butler Amanda Rishworth Stephen Bates

Community legal centres are at breaking point. People in crisis are being turned away, local outreach services and clinics are being cancelled, and some community legal centres are considering whether they can keep their doors open. We are asking the Commonwealth government to invest in a society where access to legal advice and the justice system is based on need not the size of your bank balance. We need a $125m a year increase to Commonwealth community legal centre funding. #CommunityLaw #FundEqualJustice #accesstojustice #queensland #australia

🤝 Community legal centres are more than legal services - we prevent crisis and strengthen communities. 🆘 But with limited resources, we can't help everyone who needs us. 🚨 The 2023-24 State of the Sector Report has found community legal centres were forced to turn away 390,000 people. This means for every day of the year, 1,000 people turned to our sector for help, and could not access it. The Federation joins Community Legal Centres Australia in Canberra this week to meet with MPs and Senators about the crucial need for increased, sustained investment in the national community legal sector. Every year, Community Legal Centres help hundreds of thousands of people with legal problems in areas like housing, relationships, debts and money problems, immigration and discrimination. But demand for services far outstrips the capacity of Community Legal Centres to help. Every day, Community Legal Centres are forced to turn away 1,000 people in need of legal assistance. We hope the MPs and Senators we meet with this week will come away with a greater understanding of why funding to the sector is needed so urgently, and how the funding crisis is affecting communities. #SaveCommunityLegalCentres #FundFrontlineServices #CommunityLaw

Fighting for human rights to be realised is a daily reality many Australians face. Hard to hear for many, but this is the truth of the matter. Privilege has a perspective that often does not have a sufficient vantage point (or ability) to see and respond to the circumstances of those less fortunate. I have been working in the community law space for more than two years now. It's a great honour to support such important work that is sadly often invisible to most. Why is it invisible? Because it isn't big money land, community lawyers and allied professionals are often working directly with the most under privileged, marginalised or/and chronically dismissed. Community legal centres do truly formidable work. Read more about the state of affairs when it comes to accessing justice and advocating for human rights at a grassroots level in Australia. CLCs need more funding, asap! #humanrights #advocate #communitylaw #accesstojustice #socialjustice #systemsreform #queensland #australia

RACS stands with over 160 members of Community Legal Centres Australia in calling on the Government to address the funding crisis facing the sector. CLCs provide free legal help for some of the most vulnerable in society. Overwhelming demand and funding shortages are forcing centres to turn away over 1,000 people each day and reduce services to local communities across the country. The crisis will only worsen until the sector secures a guarantee of ongoing funding. The 2024 Federal Budget failed to provide the urgent funding boost and long-term funding security the community legal sector desperately needs. With less than a year’s guaranteed funding left, community legal centres are in the most uncertain position in a decade.
