We’re just weeks away from the state election, and it’s vital that the next Queensland Government provides Queensland’s community legal centres with funding certainty by the end of 2024 under the new Access to Justice Partnership Agreement with the Commonwealth, with this year’s $12.4m “workforce uplift” included in the state’s base funding contribution. Over the past few weeks, we’ve joined sector colleagues to make this case to ministers, MPs and candidates for the election. While they’ve all expressed strong support for our work, it’s critical that we get the certainty and sustainability we need, and that our clients and communities deserve. Every day, Community Legal Centres prevent people from becoming homeless, help them mitigate rising costs of living, and deal with complex legal problems. Community Legal Centres make a real difference and need adequate and ongoing funding to continue to serve their communities. That’s why we are calling on the next State Government to help #savecommunitylegalcentres and commit to rolling the $12.4 million funding uplift allocated in the 2024-25 budget into ongoing base funding for community legal centres.

Every day, community legal centres prevent people from becoming homeless, help mitigate rising costs of living and deal with complex legal problems. We are closely connected to partners in community agencies and court registries and they tell us the demand continues to rise. In the past year, many LawRight services had to close to new clients for months at a time, due to overwhelming demand and delays to recruiting in this challenging environment. That’s why we are calling on the next State Government to help #savecommunitylegalcentres and commit to rolling the $12.4 million funding uplift allocated in the 2024-25 budget into ongoing base funding for community legal centres.

Scams are taking a destructive toll in Australia, with many people unable to ever recover the money they have lost. Register now for Community Legal Centres Queensland's upcoming webinar (Thursday 24 October - 11am to 12noon) on Scams and Consumer Rights. In this webinar, Josh Mennen, Principal Lawyer & National Litigation Leader at Maurice Blackburn, will discuss the responsibilities of Banks and other financial institutions to protect customers from being scammed or compensate them where a loss is suffered. Josh will look at instances where the loss is caused by financial abuse by a friend or family member, including withdrawal of super (a problem that was amplified by the COVID early release of super initiative in which of thousands were coerced into withdrawing super). Finally, Josh will explore the way in which AFCA and the Regulators handle these matters.
