We welcome the Commonwealth's re-affirmation of its funding contribution to the National Access to Justice Partnership agreement (2025-30) in MYEFO and the increase in funding to community legal centres. But we note that this increased funding will still fall short of what is required to meet community need. An independent, not for profit, community-based organisation providing a range of services to the community legal sector
About us
Community legal centres are independent, not-for-profit, community-based organisations that provide a range of services to everyday people, including people experiencing discrimination and disadvantage. We assist communities across Australia. Each year Centres help hundreds of thousands of people through providing a range of services for individual people as well as more broadly for the community. Centres provide a range of legal services as well as undertaking early intervention and preventative strategies such as community legal education and community development and individual skill building. Community legal centres also play a key role in community engagement, advocacy and law and policy reform. More broadly, Centres work to develop and facilitate partnerships between legal assistance providers and legal and non-legal services (for example, domestic violence organisations, community health organisations, housing services and drug and alcohol services). This allows the Centres to provide holistic help to people and is designed to avoid escalation of legal problems. Centres provide services in offices, communities and health care settings across Australia. Centres also work together in National Networks to share information and good practice and undertake policy and advocacy work. Community Legal Centres Australia's members are the eight state and territory community legal centres associations. Together, we represent nearly 180 community legal centres across Australia. Only some associations have a funded Secretariat with dedicated offices and staff (NSW, VIC, QLD and WA). Community legal centres help hundreds of thousands of people a year to untangle the legal and related problems making their lives harder. But because of limited resources, the number of people we were forced to turn away in 2023-24 could've filled the southern hemisphere's largest stadium 3.9 times over. In 2023-24, frontline domestic and family violence prevention and response made up 40-50% of the community legal sector's work nationally. For rural, remote, and very remote centres, this rises to 70-80%. Did you know that in 2023-24, community legal centres travelled almost 1.3 million kilometres to provide outreach services to people in regional, rural, remote and very remote communities? That's 3.3 times the distance to the moon. We have just sent in our 2025-26 pre-budget submission. Read: https://lnkd.in/g_iz8YSn Community legal centres help hundreds of thousands of people every year to resolve everyday legal problems, but our sector is significantly under-funded to meet need. The September 2024 Commonwealth announcement of funding security beyond 30 June 2025 and of an uplift in funding has provided a brief reprieve, but it is not enough. Our sector needs additional investment under the National Access to Justice partnership. There are several further specific issues in need of urgent attention in the 2025-26 budget, for which we make targeted funding proposals. #CommunityLaw #FundEqualJustice #SaveCommunityLegalCentres
