New Legislation to Protect Queensland Workers: The Respect at Work and Other Matters Bill On June 14, 2024, the Queensland Parliament introduced the Respect at Work and Other Matters Amendment Bill 2024. This landmark legislation aims to enhance workers' protections against discrimination, harassment, and other objectionable conduct in the workplace. Key Provisions: - Positive Duty: Employers must take reasonable and proportionate measures to eliminate discrimination based on all protected attributes, including sexual harassment. - Harassment Protections: Specific measures to address workplace harassment on the basis of sex. - Extended Complaint Timeframe: A two-year timeframe for reporting sex-based contraventions. - New Protected Attributes: Including 'expunged conviction,' ‘homelessness,' 'irrelevant criminal record,' 'irrelevant medical record,' 'physical appearance,' and 'subjection to domestic or family violence.' - Enforcement and Investigation: Expanded powers for the Queensland Human Rights Commission.
