I believe training in philosophy (my background too) is useful and makes you seek the truth by reducing any argument to its simplest propositions. Often complexity hides contradictions and layers of untested, although commonly held, assumptions. Getting to the truth helps you create strategies founded in reality and the simpler it is the more likely you'll have success when executing.
On Leadership: Having served as a leader at Amazon for several years, I've embraced two core principles that have profoundly shaped my approach to leadership. As a philosopher-turned-techie, I value distilling complex ideas into their essence, and these principles are central to my leadership philosophy. 🌟Principle #1: The key to motivating people is either by putting something scary behind them or by casting a vision so compelling that they move forward driven by sheer anticipation and excitement. 🌟Principle #2: In every meeting and interaction—whether with a team member or a customer—I face a choice: to either inject energy into the room or to drain it. This awareness guides my every action and helps maintain a positive, dynamic environment. These principles have been instrumental in crafting my leadership style. If you find these insights useful or have thoughts to share, I'd love to hear from you in the comments! #Leadership #Motivation #Teamwork #Amazon #EnergyInLeadership #VisionaryLeadership #AmazonCloud #PersonalDevelopment #ExecutiveInsights #Enablement #SalesEnablement

A quote that has transformed my thinking is the idea of the "Empty Chair", from Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.... He explains that he and his team always leave an empty chair in rooms to signify the customer. The thought is: "If what we are doing is not benefiting the consumer, what is the point?" Why is this important? At the end of the day, we do this work for the PEOPLE. It is so important to remember that having a human-centric approach invites us to walk in empathy and focus on the needs of the individual so that we can provide them with the best experience. As leaders, how can thinking of those in the “empty chair” help you to change your perspective as you produce work? #leadership #Amazon #change #humancenteredleadership #empathy #business

Gen X’s mistrust in the government was quickly and easily transferred into the corporate world especially with corporate raiders, Enron, CEO scandals and excessive bonuses, to pave our way to mistrusting leaders. Without trust there is no team. Just a group of people waiting for their next job. Agree? A change is gonna come! We hope when you buy our new book Next Gen Revolution, Multigenerational Leadership you’ll leave an Amazon review. ☑️ An online or in-person team workshop is also available. Amazon's 16 Leadership Principles. I particularly liked the first one: 𝟏. 𝐂𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐎𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 Leaders start with the customer and work backwards. They work vigorously to earn and keep customer trust. While leaders pay attention to competitors, they obsess over customers. #customerobsession #leadership #culture Amazon 👉 https://lnkd.in/g7gVkuBu

I completely agree with the sentiment. A positive work culture is essential for employee retention and overall success. Leaders play a crucial role in fostering this culture by promoting respect, supporting their teams, and providing a conducive environment for growth and development. Emphasizing the importance of people and creating an atmosphere where employees feel valued and empowered can significantly reduce turnover and enhance organizational performance. Quality gurus like Dr. Deming's principles indeed offer valuable insights into building such a culture of excellence and respect.
Research shows that employees are often more likely to leave their jobs due to conflicts with their colleagues or managers rather than the company itself. When employees find their work environment toxic or unsupportive, they tend to feel undervalued and unappreciated, leading them to seek employment elsewhere. It's important for leaders to create a positive work culture where employees feel respected, supported, and motivated to stay with the company for the long term. In short, people don't leave companies; they leave because of poor leadership. TRUE STORY: My aunt just resigned from a job 3 weeks in because of this. The supervisor in charge of training her did not want to take the time to answer any questions she had, and told the other coworkers to not help her if she asked them any questions. (TOXIC from the start)! Mind you, my aunt was a new hire just 3 weeks in. Of course, questions will arise being so new to that company's way of doing things; might I add, this was at a local banking institution (dealing with other people money), and my aunt wanted to make sure she was doing each transaction correctly. Although, she has a vast resume' dealing with large sums of money, yet and still, each company has different ways of doing things. A trainer should have patience and compassion when training a new employee. Who wouldn't want their team member doing things correctly the first time? If trained properly, questions would diminish as weeks goes by. My aunt finally went to the HR manager and stated her grievances. (This bank has had a huge turnover in the last month because of this supervisor). The HR manager told my aunt that she has figured out the problem, (being that supervisor), as to why no new hires were staying once hired. She assured my aunt that she would have a talk with that supervisor and correct her toxic behavior as they were losing valuable employees due to her behavior. To say the least, days went on and NOTHING changed. After suffering panic and anxiety attacks each morning as she prepared to go to work in a toxic and hostile environment, she resigned after only 3 weeks on the job..(something she has never done in all of her 40 yrs. of employment.) There was a blessing that came out of all of this: after putting in an application and attaching her resume', she was interviewed by another bank, and offered the job on the spot JUST 2 DAYS after resigning from that previous toxic workplace. The hiring manager assured her that their bank did not tolerate toxic employees nor did they allow their workplace to become hostile. She was told she would be trained properly and was free to ask as many questions as she needed to in order to learn her job and be effective. Needless to say, it has been a week for her and she is no longer experiencing anxiety and panic attacks when preparing to go to her workplace. Be aware if your workplace has a huge turnover in a month's time. It can't always be something wrong with the hiree!
