Let's rethink the how, not the cow. This is why I think meat tax addresses the wrong problem. Denmark has introduced the world’s first carbon tax on animal agriculture, a policy that may not support a socially just and inclusive food system transition. In my World Economic Forum op-ed, I advocate for responsible policies that address the rising demand for animal protein during times of resource scarcity, while avoiding punishing farmers or consumers. It's vital to facilitate practices that require fewer and better-managed animals: we recommend promoting regenerative smallholder farming alongside new production systems such as cellular agriculture, precision fermentation, and algal production.
