It's #SmallBusinessSaturday and here are 5 things to remember👇 1️⃣ 9 out of 10 of us really value having locally-owned businesses in our neighbourhood. They’re the heartbeat of our community and play a big part in shaping its future. 2️⃣ When you spend at small businesses, 66 cents of every dollar you spend stays right in your community. It supports local jobs, your kids’ soccer team, community infrastructure, and charities and causes close to your heart. 3️⃣ 84% of us say we'd like to do more of our shopping at small businesses but only 1 out of 3 of us go out of our way to shop at an independent retailer over a big chain. Shifting just a small portion of our spending away from major retailers and online giants makes a big difference. 4️⃣ Small businesses offer something special, whether it’s their unique products, specialized knowledge and advice, or that personal touch - like remembering your name and your favourite order. 5️⃣ More than half of us have already recommended a local small business to friends and family. Pay it back. Take the time to leave reviews for your favourite businesses, spread the word about them on social media, and recommend them to others. #SmallBusiness Canadian Federation of Independent Business #SmallBusinessEveryDay #SupportLocal #ShopWomenOwned

95% of business aren’t doing this… Over the last 6 years I’ve worked really hard at community building for our restaurants. I’ll be honest, some of it happened organically and some of it was well thought out. I’ve come to realize that community building is probably one of the top driving factors in our success and it’s allowed us to continue to grow when others are failing. People want to buy from companies they align with and that feel like they’re embedded into the community. Here are 5 ways to build community around your brand: 1. Partner with a charity. I say this often because I think it’s important to give back charities in business and in your personal life. it’s also so simple to partner with a charity you love and leverage both audiences for good. 2. Collab with another business. Other businesses don’t have to be competition, they can be a great partner. Create an event or special or gift item for the holidays that both businesses can promote and sell. Again 2 email lists are better than 1. Customers get really excited to support collabs like this. 3. Work with city and county officials to see change in your area. If you don’t know who your local officials are, find out! Local officials are elected to help the community. Invite them to your business and tell them why your business is important in your area and explain what changes your business would like to see. Biz owners grossly underestimate the power they have will local governments. 4. Go to events. Maybe you have a physical product to sell like food or goods. The more local events you go to the more people will recognize your brand as a staple in the community. We do roughly 8-10 events a year from 500 attendees to 60K attendees. 5. Network, put yourself out there. Trust me I used to HATE networking and talking to people I don’t know. I still don’t love it. But it’s a skill that takes practice and it does get easier. 🎥 video of the last event we did with Clark County Commissioner Naft. 👇 #community #smallbusiness #marketing #restaurantowner #businessowner

How to use networking skills for the greater good 🌈✨ I recently ran a fundraising event in my local pub. It was a big success and I learned A LOT. Learnings… ✨ If you’re brave enough to go out and build relationships with your local community (businesses & customers), and bold enough to ask for support (event promotion/raffle prizes/event attendance), 9 times out of 10 you’ll be met with kindness and generosity. ✨ Identify community leaders that can help create noise. ✨ A successful event requires extensive planning, the right positioning, early and heavy promotion, attentive on-the-day facilitation (your face should be sore from warm welcoming smiles) and a clear understanding of R&R (lesson learned when 9pm burger sales job was divulged to beer-charged Sous chef - freebies galore). ✨ The ‘loss aversion’ bias is a thing… ‘last tickets available’ worked a trick on the promotional material. ✨ On the day, reinforce the purpose, your personal experience and the emotion behind it to get maximum support. ✨ ‘Communities’ in the old sense of the word DO actually still exist. You just have to be open, reach out and build. ✨ Events are exhausting to run alone 😅 It takes a team to get the best outcome (thanks Mom). The results… 🌈 A singer and a full house band sang for free all day and night. 🌈 A catering service donated BBQ produce and their time to cook up a storm, enabling us to sell tickets. 🌈 £500 worth of raffle prizes were donated by local businesses. 🌈 About 50-60 people attended, even the local Mayor (quirky man in dungarees) 🌈 I’ve now raised a huge £2.5k I’m £1k away from my target (link in comments) and am raising money for the tools, equipment and teacher training to build quality schools in South African townships for children in poverty. This November, we’re heading to a township in Cape Town. 81% of South African 9-10 year olds cannot read for meaning. Mellon Educate is on a mission to change that. 🫶🏼 #networking #fundraising #community #eventplanning #eventmanagement

As the Halloween season creeps in, it's an excellent time for small businesses to collaborate on fun, festive community events that create a lasting impact. Imagine a haunted charity drive, a neighbourhood-wide trick-or-treat trail, or a spooky street fair where local businesses can showcase their products. Small businesses can maximize visibility, attract more foot traffic, and engage with the community meaningfully by working together. These events provide entertainment and strengthen the bond between companies and residents. Partnering with other businesses for a Halloween-themed event boosts your marketing efforts, too! From shared social media promotion to pooling resources for decorations, prizes, and giveaways, collaboration makes the event bigger and better for everyone involved. Not only does it increase the fun factor, but it also creates opportunities for cross-promotion, growing customer bases, and brand recognition. Hosting a joint event with a charity element—like collecting donations or hosting a spooky costume contest—shows your commitment to the community and leaves customers with a positive impression of your brand. Get in on the Halloween spirit this season and work with fellow local businesses to create a frightfully fun community event that benefits your business and your neighbours! #ABDC #cityofPG #takeonPG #indigenous #indigenousbusiness #indigenousentrepreneurs #community #entrepreneur #smallbusiness #homebusiness

Why Supporting Small Businesses Matters This Holiday Season The holidays are a time for giving, connection, and creating memories that last a lifetime. But have you ever considered how the choices you make while shopping can amplify the spirit of the season? When you support a small business, you’re not just purchasing a product—you’re investing in a dream. Every item you buy comes with a story: a family working late nights, a creator pouring their heart into their craft, or a local entrepreneur striving to bring something special to their community. Unlike big box stores, small businesses are woven into the fabric of your neighborhood. They sponsor your kids’ soccer teams, donate to local charities, and greet you by name when you walk through their doors. Your purchase directly impacts a person, not a corporation. It helps pay for dance lessons, groceries, or maybe even a much-needed holiday dinner. Shopping small is also an invitation to find gifts that are meaningful, unique, and often handcrafted with care—items you won’t find on the crowded shelves of a mega retailer. It’s about slowing down and choosing something that says, “I thought about you.” This season, consider giving more than just a gift. Give hope. Give encouragement. Give your support to someone who is working tirelessly to make their dream a reality. Small businesses don’t just sell products—they create connections, spread joy, and remind us of the importance of community. When you shop small, you’re choosing to spread that holiday magic in a way that truly matters. Let’s make this holiday season about more than convenience. Let’s make it about care. #ShopSmall #SupportLocal #SpreadJoy
