How to use networking skills for the greater good 🌈✨ I recently ran a fundraising event in my local pub. It was a big success and I learned A LOT. Learnings… ✨ If you’re brave enough to go out and build relationships with your local community (businesses & customers), and bold enough to ask for support (event promotion/raffle prizes/event attendance), 9 times out of 10 you’ll be met with kindness and generosity. ✨ Identify community leaders that can help create noise. ✨ A successful event requires extensive planning, the right positioning, early and heavy promotion, attentive on-the-day facilitation (your face should be sore from warm welcoming smiles) and a clear understanding of R&R (lesson learned when 9pm burger sales job was divulged to beer-charged Sous chef - freebies galore). ✨ The ‘loss aversion’ bias is a thing… ‘last tickets available’ worked a trick on the promotional material. ✨ On the day, reinforce the purpose, your personal experience and the emotion behind it to get maximum support. ✨ ‘Communities’ in the old sense of the word DO actually still exist. You just have to be open, reach out and build. ✨ Events are exhausting to run alone 😅 It takes a team to get the best outcome (thanks Mom). The results… 🌈 A singer and a full house band sang for free all day and night. 🌈 A catering service donated BBQ produce and their time to cook up a storm, enabling us to sell tickets. 🌈 £500 worth of raffle prizes were donated by local businesses. 🌈 About 50-60 people attended, even the local Mayor (quirky man in dungarees) 🌈 I’ve now raised a huge £2.5k I’m £1k away from my target (link in comments) and am raising money for the tools, equipment and teacher training to build quality schools in South African townships for children in poverty. This November, we’re heading to a township in Cape Town. 81% of South African 9-10 year olds cannot read for meaning. Mellon Educate is on a mission to change that. 🫶🏼 #networking #fundraising #community #eventplanning #eventmanagement

FUNdraisers should be FUN. Corporate events don’t have to feel like a chore. Nobody wants to sit through a boring evening where the only excitement is watching the fundraising thermometer creep up. People want to experience something memorable. At the African Community Education Gala, we raised over $9M. But we didn’t do it with stale speeches or awkward silences. We brought the energy, the connection, and yes... the dance moves. As the emcee, my role is to make sure guests are entertained, engaged, and excited. Because when people have fun, they give more. And more importantly—they leave wanting to invite their friends and family next year. Let’s redefine what corporate events and fundraisers can look like. They don’t have to be stiff—they can be transformational. What’s your favorite moment from a corporate event? Let me know 👇 #eventemcee #TheEngineerMC #FUNdraiser #eventhost #eventmc

I'm just come off a great session with David Scurr from CAST Centre for the Acceleration of Social Technology and Zoe Amar FCIM author of the latest Charity Digital Skills report, Zoe threw down a brilliant question as she talked through the findings from the latest charity digital survey... If you're one of those 80% of charities prioritising digital right now, take a moment and think how did you do it?........ Our volunteer recruitment process ALWAYS started with an application form and we got a few great people, but it's fair to say most that came to us and stayed were through relationships we'd built previously. We prioritised digital by starting with people, we listened, we asked people with lived experience what they wanted from a recruitment process. This is how we did digital - not by implementing a new system and asking for feedback, not by pushing posts on social media or drumming up a great new campaign, or speaking in an echo chamber to those who crossed our path, we sought out people we know struggle to get through and we asked them. I'm a firm believer that any system or process change should always start with asking the people you want to reach what they need. Our solutions to widening access are grounded in digital (our Simply Connect system) but they look personal - it's a coffee morning (limited success), an invite to see us in action (a little more success), an invite to a 1:1 (untested), new copy on our adverts. Can we do digital by starting with listening? https://lnkd.in/ek36WdZ6 If you're widening access to volunteer recruitment and feel like a bit of support along the way, I'm running our peer support network on 17th October 9.30am online, email me for details [email protected]. #usercentereddesign #livedexperience #inclusivevolunteering #wideningaccess

Boost Community Engagement and Support with these 3 Key Strategies: 🚀 Want to connect with your local community? Building strong community relationships is vital for any nonprofit's success. Here are 3 practical strategies you can implement today: Be a True Partner: Do not just show up to things to promote yourself. Serve in multiple capacity at things that matter to the community and do not set up a table or any marketing. Just be there to help. Leverage Your Space: Host events and workshops in your office to build relationships and be a true resource to your community with no strings attached. Create Mutually Beneficial Opportunities: Ensure that your engagement activities benefit both the community and your organization. If everything you do is a one way street that just benefits you people will think you are abusing the communities desire for change. Remember, community engagement is a two-way street. By providing value and fostering genuine connections, you'll cultivate a network of loyal supporters who are passionate about your cause. #NonprofitEngagement #CommunityBuilding #Impact #SocialGood #Collaboration #Nonprofit #Nonprofitleader #SocialImpact #SocialJustice #SocialChange #Makeadifference #ChangeAgents #Donate

It's been a year now since Contract Scotland began supporting the work of St Mark's Parish Church, following a referral by a member of our staff who was familiar with the work that Barry Hughes was doing. We've always believed in giving something back to the local community, but that had waned a little in the wake of the pandemic, and it took a challenge from staff to shove it back up the agenda. We've been able to provide technical support, as they looked to build a new website to allow them to reach even more members of the Raploch community, a bit of financial support to help fund essential Christmas events and summer holiday clubs (where kids are both entertained and, more importantly, fed. We've even sent half a dozen members of staff along to help staff those events and keep the kids safe. This post, though, isn't about Contract Scotland. It's not even about St. Marks. It's about the impact that seemingly small and not particularly expensive action can have within a local community. We've supported all manner of very worthy charities and initiatives who all do very important work over the last 3 decades, but none has had as immediate an impact as the investment of a wee bit of time and a bit of cash has had, as a result of the relationship we've developed with Barry Hughes and his team. Plenty businesses support charities and do hugely important CSR work. If you're yet to offer support to offer an organisation in the immediate vicinity of where your business is based, though, I can heartily recommend it. #StMarks #churchofscotland #RecruitmentRedefined

Seeing the post gain 1.2k reach, over 200 likes, and countless supportive comments was truly inspiring. As a laundry service provider, it's easy to get caught up in daily operations and miss the bigger picture. Many businesses overlook the importance of community connections, thinking their services alone are enough. Here’s how we turned this realization into a strength: Engage Locally: Sponsoring local events and participating in community fairs shows our business cares about the community’s well-being. Build Partnerships: Collaborating with other local businesses for joint promotions or services has expanded our reach and fostered a sense of unity. Support Local Causes: Contributing to local charities and initiatives enhances our reputation and builds loyalty. By focusing on these aspects, we’ve created a loyal customer base that sees our business as an integral part of their community. Don’t let this oversight be your downfall—turn it into your biggest strength! #CommunityEngagement #LocalBusiness #CustomerLoyalty #LaundryService
