Hiring now means less pressure and more choice. 🔹 More Time, Better Decisions: A proactive approach allows for a thoughtful, measured hiring process—rather than rushed decisions in a tight January market. 🔹 Cost-effective planning: January start dates can be an attractive option for candidates. This approach can support more effective budgeting and forecasting for the year ahead. Skills-based hiring could be the future—but getting there is no small feat. In a recent webinar, Amy Dearking broke down three critical barriers holding organizations back from fully embracing skills over traditional credentials like education and experience: 1️⃣ Mindset Shift: Many hiring managers are still rooted in a traditional hiring mindset. Shifting these deeply ingrained habits requires thoughtful change management. 2️⃣ Identifying Skills: Without the right tools or expertise, most companies struggle to confidently pinpoint the critical skills that drive success. 3️⃣ Tech Limitations: Today’s HR tools are built on outdated job architecture models, making it hard to track and manage a truly skills-based workforce. At BrightHire, we’re helping bridge the gap by empowering hiring teams with tools that make skills-based hiring not just possible—but practical. From AI-powered insights to structured interview guidance, we make it easier to uncover the skills that matter most, enabling more informed, confident hiring decisions. Rethinking about the hiring strategies has become essential in the competitive job market. Instead of just matching resumes to job descriptions, we should focus on aligning candidates with our business values and vision. Here's why hiring for business value can transform your organization: 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐢𝐭: Employees who resonate with your company’s values tend to work better within teams, fostering a collaborative and positive work environment. 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: When employees believe in the mission and goals of the company, they are more motivated and committed to their work, leading to higher productivity. 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡: Hiring individuals who align with your business values ensures they grow with the company, contributing to its long-term success and stability. 𝐄𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: Value-aligned employees often go above and beyond their job descriptions because they are genuinely invested in the company’s success. 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞: Employees who understand and share your business values are more likely to take initiative and drive innovation, helping your company stay competitive. Prioritize hiring for business value to build a strong, dedicated, and high-performing team. This strategy not only supports your company’s culture but also propels it towards sustained success. The evolving needs of the labor market push up against stubborn systems. Change is hard. Skills-based hiring is change. I applaud Lightcast U.S. Department of Commerce and U.S. Department of Labor for providing this "starter kit" to build momentum and help the expansion of skills-based hiring.
Meet the maturity model. Is your state or organization adopting skills-based hiring practices? Or are you helping organizations move to skills-first hiring? If so, Lightcast's Skills-Based Hiring Toolkit — which was listed as a resource in a new skills-first starter kit from the Department of Labor and Department of Commerce — should be a helpful resource. "We're stepping into a new era in the world of work. Labor markets across the globe are facing widespread scarcity," says my colleague Mark H. Hanson. "Job titles and historical HR frameworks of managing talent and work are no longer effective for solving the current challenges facing our workforce. We need to shift. But what is the end game?" This is where our maturity model comes in as a diagnostic to see how far along your organization (or state, city, region) is in taking a skills-based approach. In our monthly Illuminate newsletter this morning, Mark and our team highlight three first steps to take as you try to simplify and start on a skills-based strategy: 1. Identify critical roles. Start small! Ask yourself, what are the key roles that are a business priority for my organization in the next 12 months? 2. Identify the most meaningful skills. Compare current skills to their importance in the market and confirm your hiring manager's and organization's priorities. 3. Upgrade your job postings. What kind of talent exists in the market? How do the skills and requirements you're asking for impact the candidate pool?
