Last week was a productive week on the ground at the ASU+GSV Summit, connecting with education and workforce leaders from across the globe to explore how generative AI will shape future careers, why upskilling is so critical, and what companies must do to embrace this evolution. Core topics in Corporate Learning discussions at ASU+GSV were AI, Skills (+Certifications), and Impact measurement. Here are some key takeaways: -        AI: Impressive applications by startups and enterprises were showcased. However, there's a trend of applying AI broadly to see "what sticks." It seems we will encounter many bright and shiny objects in the coming years before clarity emerges on effective applications. Despite this, the potential rewards for early experimentation outweigh the risks for enterprises looking to stay ahead. -        Skills: Everyone understands that their organizations need to move into a skills-driven space. However, it involves simultaneously solving multiple complex issues like taxonomy/anthology, governance, inference, certification/assessment, marketplace, etc. While there is still hope for large tech players to provide comprehensive skills platforms, in the absence of clear solutions HR and L&D leaders have to be creative and experiment with what is available. -        Measurement: the topic of learning ROI is still relevant and there is still no universal solution on how to do it. Our panel (huge thanks to Linda Jingfang Cai, Rochana Golani, Brandon Sammut for participating, and C. Patrick G. E. for moderating) discussed practical approaches, but finding a way to measure Return on Learning Investments overall remains elusive. The best strategies so far involve either a direct connection of learning programs with productivity (Sales Enablement programs are typically the best example) or smart pilots and A/B testing to measure long-term business outcomes. ASU+GSV was as always fun, engaging, and inspiring and continues to be one of the best EdTech events. At Accenture, I used my foresight training to help Fortune 500 companies envision how they would thrive in the world 10+ years in the future. These future visioning workshops, which we often referred to as "the art of the possible," unlocked innovative ideas for new products and business models. The workshops were fun and inspiring— but they never really felt urgent. Today, the breakneck pace of the AI arms race changes everything. Advances we once expected to take a decade now happen within 18 months. This rapid development makes it challenging to keep products and business models relevant. Foresight is no longer about "the art of the possible". It's about the art of survival. Thinking about the future has suddenly become urgent because it’s barreling towards us much faster than it was even a few short years ago. Companies that want to survive and thrive need to incorporate foresight into their business practices. Foresight workshops help your team anticipate advances and prepare for (no longer distant) future scenarios. The venture community needs to start doing this as well. A lot of money is being invested right now in companies that will end up in the OpenAI demo day bodycount.

Had a fantastic time at #SXSWEDU reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. The enthusiasm for and thoughtfulness around integrating #AI into education was obvious. I'm encouraged by the sector's innovation and cautious optimism. It’s important, it’s necessary, it’s comforting to hear things like “this could be the great equalizer, if it’s done right”. However, the critic in me can’t help it, so here’s what I think is missing emphasis in these conversations: 👩🏫 We need to consider the long-term impact of AI on interpersonal relationships. AI should help *build* human connections, not replace them. Julia Freeland Fisher and I had a brief panic on the sidelines about this (follow Julia for expert opinions on social capital!). I heard the following sentiment in one of the few unrelated-to-AI sessions I attended, but think it’s apt in this context: “When we think about how we are connected, we realize we are connected”. This is not only important for educator buy-in, but in setting young people up for success in an increasingly global world where collaboration is here to stay. Part of the reason why the Q&A platform remains so important to our work at CareerVillage. 🤝 Collaboration is paramount. Let's work together to avoid duplicating efforts and maximize impact. I have been impressed with the many AI coalition and peer-cohort models emerging (special shout out to the AI accelerators we’ve participated in so far: GitLab Foundation, Salesforce, and others to be announced). That’s how we approached the development Coach, and I’m more convinced than ever it’s the right direction for building #AIforEducation. 🔗 Finally, AI has the potential to break down silos and drive systemic change, but we must act thoughtfully. It’s not a new concept, but perhaps there’s a new solution that is worth exploring. (For example, we could use LLMs to help create a shared measurement vocabulary.) Excited to continue these discussions and share insights from our work with the AI Career Coach as we get closer to launching it. As part of the GGI Impact Lab, YLP Program, my team and I had the valuable opportunity to work on a project titled "Future of Work: Embracing Automation and Upskilling the Workforce." This experience allowed me to collaborate with dedicated professionals and provided us with deep insights into the future of work in an AI-driven world. Drawing from our experience on the project, I would like to share some insights on upskilling and reskilling strategies that could be beneficial in today’s job market. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to rise, the employment landscape is undergoing significant transformation, altering industries and job roles. AI is penetrating complex sectors like healthcare and manufacturing. With technology increasingly taking over major job markets, job seekers need to adopt strategic changes. some of which include the following: 🌟Cultivating soft skills: A recent report from Microsoft (2023) emphasizes that skills like analytical judgment, adaptability, and emotional intelligence are crucial for employment in an AI-driven future. 🌟Embracing technological advancements: Learning to navigate the complexities of AI will enable candidates to adapt to new structural changes in the workplace. 🌟Networking: Building connections with a community of learners and professionals on platforms like LinkedIn, as well as in-person, will provide support, insights, and opportunities for advancement in the job market. 🌟Embrace lifelong learning: Developing a habit of continuous learning through online platforms and peer interactions is essential. Enrolling in online courses to enhance skills is also highly advisable.
