One of the best qualities amongst founders is to under promise and over deliver. As private companies, the founders have less time to prove this as compared to public companies and that makes their job more challenging. However, as a founder if you are able to build that perception, consider your fundraising job half done. Most board members will tell you that absolute performance lacks importance as compared to budget vs actuals. In companies where founders manage to practice this, the board meetings get over in no time. However, it gets tricky when founders have not been able to meet the projections. In such cases, presenting to the board is about how you communicate the reasons and more often is an art. I have seen high quality founders call a spade a spade, who do not mince words and accept the shortcomings of the team (and not blame it on the market) and yet show the same enthusiasm and promise that he / she had when starting the company.
