One of the best qualities amongst founders is to under promise and over deliver. As private companies, the founders have less time to prove this as compared to public companies and that makes their job more challenging. However, as a founder if you are able to build that perception, consider your fundraising job half done. Most board members will tell you that absolute performance lacks importance as compared to budget vs actuals. In companies where founders manage to practice this, the board meetings get over in no time. However, it gets tricky when founders have not been able to meet the projections. In such cases, presenting to the board is about how you communicate the reasons and more often is an art. I have seen high quality founders call a spade a spade, who do not mince words and accept the shortcomings of the team (and not blame it on the market) and yet show the same enthusiasm and promise that he / she had when starting the company. After a decade of stalled business in the U.S., we’ve finally seen a post-pandemic rebound. With so many exciting young entrepreneurs coming up, I’m thrilled to be in a position to help guide young founders, with one huge area of opportunity to be found in my U.S. Latino community, which is statistically the most entrepreneurial of any cohort in the Nation. At the same time, they receive less than 1% of start-up capital available. That’s why I helped seed L'ATTITUDE VENTURES as a vehicle to promote this deserving generation of entrepreneurs. In addition to watching their successes, one of the most rewarding aspects to my role as a partner is providing strategic advice and leadership philosophy to founders and new CEOs. In turn, I learn from their philosophy and perspective as next-gen business leaders, which then informs my own work across Boards and other organizations I lead.
