I hate sales calls. I prefer strategy calls. The difference? Sales calls are with leads who kind of know me, but want me to sell my services to them. Like a job interview. I hate those. Strategy calls are with leads who already know, like, and trust me. All that’s left to do is talk about how I can help them, specifically. And how do I guarantee that I only jump on strategy calls? I remember a friend sharing her interview experience with me. And this is how it went. She was applying for a sales position at a company. When the employer asked her to describe the product and her sales strategies, she was lost. She hadn't done any research about the product. Imagine going in for a sales interview and not knowing what you are selling. This is exactly what I see most COACHES do. You are writing content but not knowing WHO you are writing it for. Next time you hit the post, ask yourself these three questions: -Who am I writing this for? (TA/peers) -Will they be able to relate to it? -What action do I want them to take? These questions can help you ‘sell’ to the right audience. Here's my approach that turns a simple object into an irresistible offer! 🎯 Step 1: Flip the Script with a Question When the interviewer handed me the pen, I didn’t dive straight into a pitch. Instead, I asked, “How often do you use a pen?” 🧐 This might seem basic, but it’s a sneaky way to uncover their *needs*. Step 2: Tailor Your Pitch to Their Answer Now, depending on their response, the magic happens: Scenario 1: If they said, “I use a pen 2-3 times a day,” I’d respond with: *“Sir, that shows you use a pen for the most important tasks like signing documents. You need an elegant pen like this one to add prestige to every signature you make.”* ✍️ Scenario 2: If they replied, “I use a pen a lot throughout the day,” I’d hit them with: *“That tells me you need a pen that’s built to last—highly durable for your daily high-octane usage. This pen is exactly what you’re looking for.”* 💪 Step 3: The Power of the Trial Then, I’d confidently hand the pen to them and say, “Give it a try, sir.” Letting them hold the pen builds a tangible connection. 👐 Step 4: Seal the Deal Finally, I’d wrap it up by saying, “I think this pen would be a great fit for you. Before the interview, study your personal brand. What are your strengths and/or achievements? What are you known for? What is pragmatic and dynamic about you? 2. Create several personal brand statements together and practice them. 3. Be sure to include something unique and authentic about yourself. Tie it to your brand. 4. Storytelling 🎤 🧔🏽 In any sales, growth, and biz dev role, the art of storytelling is crucial! It humanizes the sales process, creates emotional connections with customers, and helps illustrate the value and benefits of a product or service in a memorable way. This storytelling process relates to interviews as well. Here's a tip to help prepare you for upcoming interviews. 💁🏽♂️ - Column 1️⃣ - Write down what you're great at. (ie. prospecting, sourcing, contracting, financial modeling, overcoming objections). Column 2️⃣ - Write a short story that exemplifies it. "One time I did 'XYZ' or was part of a team that did 'XYZ'."
