🌟 Reflections from Fintech Recruits 2024, 3rd edition : A Market Full of Promise and Paradoxes 🌟 Last Friday, I had the privilege of attending the Fintech Recruits 2024 event. It was a day brimming with energy, ideas, and insights. Here are a few key takeaways that left me both inspired and reflective: 1️⃣ The Allure of Fintech The sheer number of students expressing a desire to work in fintech was remarkable. This sector clearly captures the imagination of the next generation, signaling its dynamism and future potential. 2️⃣ Crypto-Savvy Youth Many attendees had already ventured into cryptocurrencies, not just as users but as investors. This reflects a growing comfort with financial innovation and a readiness to shape its evolution. 3️⃣ Diversity of Talent The creativity and innovation from institutions like 42 Luxembourg shone through. These students brought a wealth of unique perspectives, emphasizing the importance of non-traditional educational paths. 4️⃣ A Vibrant Atmosphere The air was alive with positive energy and entrepreneurial spirit. Conversations with these young minds were contagious—they’re not just looking for jobs; they’re envisioning futures. But amid this optimism, some challenges became clear: ❗ A Surplus of Data Talent The event showcased a significant pool of data experts. Yet, this abundance raised questions: Are we underutilizing these skills? Is the market still too fragmented to harness the full potential of AI on a large scale? ❗ The Future of Work Is Here—but Is the Market Ready? Despite the evident talent, large-scale AI initiatives seem rare. Does this reflect a gap in strategic adoption, or is it a sign that we are still in the early stages of building AI ecosystems? What Can We Learn? ✨ The Power of Preparation The availability of talent signals an unprecedented opportunity for organizations to embrace and scale AI-driven projects. ✨ Collaboration Is Key Bringing together diverse voices—public, private, and educational—will unlock the true potential of this vibrant workforce. ✨ Think Big, Act Now The groundwork is laid. Let’s champion bold, scalable initiatives to ensure these incredible talents can shape the innovations of tomorrow. To all the dreamers, doers, and data enthusiasts I met—thank you for the inspiration. The future is in your hands, and I can’t wait to see what you build. #FintechRecruits2024 #AI #FutureOfWork #Innovation #Talent #Fintech #42Luxembourg Laurent Peusch | Serge Linckels | Antony Martini

It rightly so took the entire weekend to recover from all the activity that was London Tech Week 2024! 🚀 What did we get up to? 🤔 We started our week with Rise, created by Barclays Presents: Fintech and Banking - Where are we headed next? 💬 The session involved a panel discussion hosted by Brindley White, Vice President Innovation at Barclays; Rachel Curtis, CEO and Co-Founder of Inicio AI; Katherine Wilson, VC at Illuminate Financial and Joe Lines, CEO and Co-founder of Nook. The group discussed the difficulties of being a founder, fundraising in the current economic climate, and naturally, the regulatory market for fintechs. They also provided their predictions for the future of fintech. #onlytimewilltell Here are some of the key learnings we took from the event: ✍️ 🤖 Just because you add .ai to your company name doesn’t necessarily mean you’re an AI startup! Make sure you are using the technology to help solve an existing problem. 📈 The government needs to start investing seriously in startups, helping to support the ecosystem, but also to boost the UK economy. 📍 When founding a startup, know your niche and stick to it. There is no need to branch out and try to do everything, own your space to make sure you’re the best in the market at what you do! Later on we took time to experience the the official London Tech Week conference at the Kensington Olympia! It was a great opportunity to meet some founders from exciting startups and learn more about the upcoming trends in tech! What was your #LondonTechWeek highlight? We’re looking forward to next year already! 🤩 #Technology #Conference #Fintech #Advice

Who knew financial institutions were such tech wallflowers? 🌼 A recent survey of 501 UK financial decision-makers has revealed that 78% of firms are patting themselves on the back for their "good" internal tech use, and 86% are strutting their stuff with customer-facing technology. Yet, when it comes to adopting new tech, 59% suddenly turn into that friend who stuck with their flip phone a bit too long, describing themselves as risk-averse. 🙅 Is this the financial equivalent of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"? Or could it be related to 38% of these institutions also admitting to a digital skills gap among their teams? Thing is – this tech hesitancy could be the difference between success and being left in the digital dust. How can #fintech startups leverage this aversion to their advantage? What opportunities lie in bridging the digital skills gap?

📣 New research out today - While the majority of UK #FinTech directors believe their board has vital Gen AI skills and experience, 47% of those surveyed – as part of new research by @EY and @InnovateFinance – believe the expertise are missing, and only 42% think their board holds the necessary fundraising skills. In addition, the UK’s top 50 FinTech boards have just 22% female representation and 37% of all UK FinTechs surveyed are male-only. Like all #financialservices firms, strategic, diverse, and purpose-driven boards are key to driving outperformance. But, UK FinTechs focused on rapid growth and innovation can understandably face challenges around gaps in key skills and diversity across their #boardrooms. Promisingly, there’s strong appetite to improve this balance. UK FinTech CEOs and Chairs interviewed are unanimous in recognising that diverse boardrooms, guided by a clear purpose, are fundamental to achieving sustainable growth. This Financial Times article came out over the weekend, and I needed a few days to reflect. I deeply sympathize with Ian Hogarth's perspective that Europe lacks audacity—something I’ve experienced first-hand as a deep-tech founder who started my company in #London. His key points about the role of #RepeatFounders resonate strongly: 1) Experienced founders are critical to funding new branches of the tech tree: 60% of #SiliconValley #VC partners are ex-founders, compared to just 8% in Europe. 2) Experienced founders help new founders avoid mistakes—something I could have greatly benefited from during my early days in London. 3) Europe can excel by focusing on its strengths, like #fusion, and embracing experienced founders—the issue isn’t primarily #regulation. However, it’s not just about having enough experienced founders or fostering audacity and ambition. Individual European founders already have the ambition and burning drive. The real challenge lies in the cultural environment. I’ve long argued that the European business landscape lacks sufficient risk appetite and a sense of ownership (I was quoted here yesterday in The Times by David Wighton: https://lnkd.in/e-C5w82u, https://lnkd.in/eayrE-SU). When Eigen Technologies won its first production client, #GoldmanSachs, in 2017, we were just 18 people. I worked nonstop during my honeymoon to secure the deal, finally succeeding with five days left. But instead of celebrating those last days with my new wife, Andrea Snavely, I faced a mutiny: 16 of my 18 employees signed a joint email imploring me not to take the deal, calling it “too risky.” Keep in mind, we didn’t have any customers at the time. So, instead of enjoying the last leg of my honeymoon, I spent it calling each employee individually to convince them to move forward. Ultimately, we delivered the first regulatory AI deployment of its kind—a real milestone in #EnterpriseAI. When I share this story with Americans, they’re astonished: “Of course you do it—what else are you there for?” But many Europeans respond with, “That’s super risky—what if you fail?” #Europe and the #UK are improving slightly when it comes to risk-taking, but they’re still lagging way behind the #US—and even #China. As both a Brit and an American, I agree with Ian: Europe needs not only to stand tall but also to embrace the journey without fear.
