Hiring for your team requires you to know the following: 1. What are the qualities you appreciate of the new joinee? 2. What are the qualities that you exhibit? 3. What do you value as attributes and attitude in the team? 4. Do you want someone who is smart and expert in her/his game? 5. Do you want someone who is good at taking instructions and following through? Answering these questions before you sit to evaluate anyone for your team is imperative. This is also a definition about you. The things that you value, are consistent about doing and believing in. Hiring is an art. Your first hire is always special :) A few days ago, I was talking to my friend, Shreshth Kapoor, and he asked me, “How was the experience of hiring your first employee?” And honestly, it took me back. At that time, I didn’t know anything about hiring. NOTHING AT ALL. -I didn’t know how to mentor someone. -I didn’t know how to run a team. -And the idea of being responsible for someone’s work (and paycheck!) felt like a massive risk. The first person I hired wasn’t even a full-time employee. It was an intern. This was a HUGE RISK to me and honestly, not a great experience either. But that experience changed everything. It taught me how to guide someone, how to learn from them, and how to collaborate as a team. Sure, I made mistakes (many, haha!), but we figured it out together. I have had such a great week this week! Firstly, I completed a load of tasks I was putting off because I was dreading doing them (very admin heavy not my happy place). But what really made my week was reconnecting with my network. Not just my Linkedin network but people I had actually previously worked with. One of my amazing ex early in career hires now smashing their career came to me to ask for help looking for a new role. Although I am not really in recruitment anymore of course I was going to try and help as many of my network still are, either that or a lot of the Apprentices, Grads and Interns I hired are now hiring managers looking to grow their teams ( this makes me feel so old!) I mostly reached out to people I had previously worked with because if I can help them fill a role whilst I help someone find a job at a great company then win win! So many replied, even if they didn’t have a role and it was so nice to reconnect again and remember why I loved working with them so much. This is what I love! Connecting people, helping people to progress their careers, that might be kickstarting their career in their first “proper” job or connecting them with others to move their career forwards. If I also help someone fill a role with a fantastic person then fantastic! It’s the same in my current role the part I love the most is making connections with organisations we might be able to support.
