It’s a very interesting time to be in the wine business in Sonoma, Napa and all of California. Wine consumption continues to decline and even a study last week suggested that 1 glass of red wine may not be necessarily helpful for one’s health. Even with this disparaging view, other see this as a unique opportunity to acquire well positioned wineries and vineyards at excellent values. The US is the largest wine market globally and in 2023, consumption decreased by 3.0%. The EU accounts for 48% of the world's wine consumption and wine consumption declined 1.8% in 2023. WHY WORLD-CLASS WINEMAKERS ARE HEADED FOR THE FINGER LAKES For decades, Napa was the promised land for ambitious vintners eager to make a mark in the wine industry. But in recent years, a number of factors are sending winemakers to one of the most quietly beloved but stubbornly under-the-radar regions in the country: the Finger Lakes. Establishing a winery in Napa is now really only possible for the rich. Prime vineyard land alone runs between $300,000 and $400,000+ per acre in the Napa Valley, according to a cost assessment study conducted by UC Davis – and that’s just the land, without considering the costs of labor, the building out of a winery, or the purchase of any of the tools needed to farm, ferment, age and produce a single bottle of wine. In contrast, planting a vineyard and bringing it to production in the Finger Lakes, requires about $43,443, all in per acre, a study byCornell University found. This simple maths pushed wife and husband duo Ria D’Aversa and Michael Penn to put down a stake in the Finger Lakes with Ria’s Wines in 2022. Prior to discovering Finger Lakes, Penn was the head winemaker at Green and Red Vineyard in Napa, while D’Aversa managed Constellation Brands’ Napa vineyard, and the duo had also launched their own passion project, Pennrose. On paper, everything was rosy. A robust manufacturing sector in Washington & Oregon is their wine industries. Washington & Oregon grow some of the best wine grapes and produce some of the best wines in the nation (world). This should not be a surprise, if you look at the globe and recognize the Pacific Northwest is on the same latitude as some of the best wine regions in the world and has an abundance of water. The BIG DAWG (Appropriate verbiage today with the University of Washington playing for the College Football National Championship) in the region's wine industry is Chateau Ste. Michelle . Chateau Ste. Michelle recently announced it will be pulling back on its grape purchases in the region. On face value, this could cause concern, but it actually creates a robust opportunity, as detailed in the Robb Report ( https://lnkd.in/dhg4BTvD). The pull back should allow vineyards to sell product at enhanced values, smaller wineries to access quality grapes that were previously unavailable, and when appropriate vineyards to transition acreage to different varietals by being released from contractual commitments. I look forward to seeing what boutique and family wineries are able to produce using 2024 harvested grapes. Oliver Kotelnikov, the Director of IBA's Hospitality Industry Transaction Division, & I have served as guest lecturers at the region's viticulture schools related to entrepreneurship as a potential career path. Based on the caliber of the students and the enthusiasm in those programs, we both are confident that wine will continue to be a successful entrepreneurial path and a compliment to a quality meal in Washington & Oregon far into the foreseeable future. Hoping some Washington champagne gets popped tonight in celebration of success on the field.

Vintage Wine Estate a major #wine producer in #usa bankrupted with 342 million USD depts. Between the lines of the CEO note, a very flashing statement about the mass regular wine production, which is a main cause of the failure, while nearby small wineries of specialized unique wine, have made it easy post COVID pandemic and its associated recession. Sharing this to spot the light on two things: 1- #Lebanon is increasing grapes for wine production, and that's likely without a clear plan if we have to stop at 3000 Ha plantations or we keep on reaching 5000 Ha or more ?! 2- Lebanon produces a lot of regular mass wine, while trials on #indigenous varieties showed a great success, which we should build on a secured plan. Cheers
