WHY WORLD-CLASS WINEMAKERS ARE HEADED FOR THE FINGER LAKES For decades, Napa was the promised land for ambitious vintners eager to make a mark in the wine industry. But in recent years, a number of factors are sending winemakers to one of the most quietly beloved but stubbornly under-the-radar regions in the country: the Finger Lakes. Establishing a winery in Napa is now really only possible for the rich. Prime vineyard land alone runs between $300,000 and $400,000+ per acre in the Napa Valley, according to a cost assessment study conducted by UC Davis – and that’s just the land, without considering the costs of labor, the building out of a winery, or the purchase of any of the tools needed to farm, ferment, age and produce a single bottle of wine. In contrast, planting a vineyard and bringing it to production in the Finger Lakes, requires about $43,443, all in per acre, a study byCornell University found. This simple maths pushed wife and husband duo Ria D’Aversa and Michael Penn to put down a stake in the Finger Lakes with Ria’s Wines in 2022. Prior to discovering Finger Lakes, Penn was the head winemaker at Green and Red Vineyard in Napa, while D’Aversa managed Constellation Brands’ Napa vineyard, and the duo had also launched their own passion project, Pennrose. On paper, everything was rosy. Other states, other wines We have already discussed the most important wine regions of North America; from New York, Oregon, Washington to California. But wine is made in almost all US states. Let's review the other states and their wines. Cross-border Idaho As we already touched on in Oregon's Cross-Border Wines, Idaho does not have an AVA that is entirely within its own borders. Snake River Valley is partly located in Oregon, but also the other appellation Lewis Clark Valley AVA for wines is partly located in one of the other states, Washington. This is the third appellation in Idaho, after Snake River Valley and Eagle Foothills, and was recognized in 2016. It extends along the courses of the Clearwater and Snake rivers. Of the 124,000 hectares allocated as an appellation, only 40 hectares have been planted. Due to the lower hills of the river area, it is warmer here in the summer. In winter it can go down to -20C, making frost damage a real risk. https://lnkd.in/e4phWBxC

Our longtime Winemaker, Paul Draper, was once posed with a question: What is the most crucial tool to crafting fine wine. His response was ‘The wine glass’. There is no better example of this than how we assemble our Monte Bello wine each vintage. The various vineyard lots are blind tasted without knowledge of the specific grape variety makeup or the volume of each lot. The decision to include or exclude is final regardless of the specifics that are unveiled at the end. This approach is free from any preconceived notions in the blending process and ensures the highest possible quality of the final wine. https://lnkd.in/dU3Yy7Sw #wine #winebusiness

A single vineyard-designated wine refers to a wine made from grapes sourced exclusively from one specific vineyard or block within a vineyard. This designation emphasizes the unique characteristics and terroir of that particular vineyard, as the grapes reflect the soil, climate, and other environmental factors specific to that location. Winemakers often produce single vineyard designate wines to showcase the distinctiveness and quality of grapes grown in a particular site, allowing wine enthusiasts to explore the nuances of terroir and appreciate the individuality of each vineyard's expression in the wine. Pricing for single vineyard designate wines may vary depending on factors such as vineyard prestige, grape quality, and production costs. #CalligraphyWine #WineCommunity #Gratitude #WineStory #Winemaker #VineyardVibes #WineLover #BehindTheScenes #RussianRiverValley #womanowned #WineLover #vivo #wineoclock #winetime #sonomacounty #winecountry #winecritics #wineratings #wine

BOXT, the female-founded, direct-to-consumer winery, has launched its first-ever limited-edition, signed, small-vineyard press. Founder & CEO Sarah Puil and the BOXT master winemaker meticulously crafted these exceptional wines, sourcing grapes from family-owned vineyards and perfecting the blends over months of tasting sessions. 'We spent months perfecting these limited-edition wines, sourcing each grape from family-owned vineyards up and down California and Washington, fulfilling my vision of what I wanted to create: making wines that would honor the terroir – the sense of place – unique to each vineyard, each grape,' said Puil. Sustainability is a core focus for BOXT. The winery aims to reduce the astronomical waste produced by single-use glass bottles in an industry where 90% of wines are meant for consumption within a year. BOXT's innovative packaging allows wines to remain fresh for over 30 days after opening. The limited-edition wines join BOXT's collection of whites, reds, and rosés. Each bottle is numbered and hand-signed by Puil. Vineyards were carefully selected, grapes handpicked and sorted in the meticulous crafting process. @drinkboxt #sustainability #winemaking #limitededition

NAPA’S NEW CRYSTAL SPRINGS AVA APPROVED Crystal Springs of Napa Valley AVA becomes the 18th official appellation for the prestigious wine region. The new AVA slots into the hilly area in a northwestern region of Napa Valley between the St Helena, Calistoga and Howell Mountain AVAs. Crystal Springs of Napa Valley has officially been named an American Viticulture Area (AVA), a designation denoting region-specific appellation labelling that can appear on American wines. Steven Burgess, the former owner of Burgess Cellars, who has historically had contentious relationships with residents and his former winery’s new ownership, spearheaded efforts to create the Crystal Springs appellation. While this marks the first official Napa Valley appellation since the adoption of the Coombsville AVA in 2011, some contest that it may continue a trend of consumer confusion across California’s wines and regions.
