This critical issue requires immediate attention, as it not only poses environmental challenges but also affects those who struggle to secure enough food for themselves. By working together to reduce food waste, Serbia can help to ensure a more sustainable and equitable food system for all. 🗑️Each year, Serbia discards an alarming 247,000 tons of food, which averages to about 35 kg per person. The food service sector is responsible for around 40,000 tons of this waste annually. Kitchen waste makes up 20% of the total, while 15% comes from food left uneaten on customers' plates. The reasons behind food waste in Serbia are varied, including inefficient agricultural practices, inadequate storage and transportation options, and consumer behavior. Many farmers face challenges with outdated equipment and limited market access, leading to significant losses after harvest. Additionally, consumers frequently buy more food than they can eat, resulting in waste. 💡The Hack is scheduled to take place on October 12 and 19. The application process has not started yet. Food waste inflicts $1trn economic loss on global scale, UN report warns. This is according to UNEP’s Food Waste Index Report 2024, co-authored with the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP), which provides the global estimate on food waste at retail and consumer levels. In 2022, global food waste reached 1.05 billion tonnes, including inedible parts, averaging 132 kilograms per capita and representing nearly 20% of all available food for consumers. Households accounted for 60% of this waste, followed by food services at 28% and retail at 12%. These figures exclude an additional 13% of the world’s food lost within the supply chain, as estimated by Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), which occurs between harvest and market. UNEP’s executive director Inger Andersen said: “Food waste is a global tragedy. Millions will go hungry today as food is wasted across the world.

Food waste is a huge problem in Romania, where over 6 million tons of food are thrown away annually, incurring unnecessary costs for Romanian households – sums that could be better used for other purposes. 6,000 tons of food are thrown away every single day in Romania and 40% comes from the restaurants. !!!! A very interesting and thorough discussion about food waste - a topic that we shouldn’t still need to be talking about. A couple of key things stood out to me: 1. We need to measure the amount of food being wasted and lost across the supply chain/ food system ‘’The old maxim “What gets measured gets managed” is crucial for food wastage. In order to act on waste and loss you need to have a clear target for the reductions you want to achieve and tools to measure their progress, so that actions are appropriate and effective. Yet in most countries this basic requirement isn’t being met.’’ 2. Food needs to be given more value ‘’If we value our freedom to create waste more than we do the good of society and the planet, then something has gone very wrong indeed.’’
