Is Germany losing the AI race? 🚆 The below chart shows an exciting shift in the geographical distribution of the leading AI researchers recognised at NeurIPS, one of the most prestigious conferences. While the US continues to make up the majority, its share fell from 65% in 2019 to 57% in 2022. At the same time, countries such as China (12%) and Germany (4%) have gained in importance, albeit to very different degrees. What does this mean for Germany?🇩🇪 With only 4% of the world's leading AI researchers, the question arises: Why is this? Germany undoubtedly has excellent research institutions and a strong industrial base. Nevertheless, there are challenges, such as Research funding: is there enough investment in AI research to keep up with global competition? Talent promotion: Is Germany attracting enough top international researchers or are they migrating to countries with better conditions? Innovation culture: Do we have the right innovation culture that favours ground-breaking research? AI will revolutionise science. This advancement raises questions both esoteric and more broadly that we need to carefully consider and answer. For example, if AIs become increasingly responsible for creating, reviewing and examining scientific literature how will this impact the value of traditional scientific papers? What are the public perceptions of AI for science? How do we deal with big data? What supportive policies and structures are needed to ensure this is a future we craft rather than amble into?
