Curious about your microbiome—the trillions of microorganisms living in your body? Prof Gene Tyson FAA has pioneered new diagnostic tests to reveal their role in your health. He’s also developed methods to study microorganisms that can't be grown in the lab—allowing many to be studied for the first time. QUT (Queensland University of Technology) #FellowFriday

Trust in politics has always been important, but it has taken on added significance in recent years as major events have been characterised by low trust and increasing cynicism and scepticism about politics and politicians. Yet despite so much talk about the crisis of trust in democracy, there has been no sustained research that directly engages with the perspectives and experiences of politicians. In this talk, James Weinberg PhD will tackle this important gap by asking not only whether the public trusts in politicians, but also whether politicians accurately perceive the trust placed in them, and how much our current age of distrust impacts politicians on a personal level. Ariadne Vromen will then dig deeper into what this could mean for Australian politicians in the face of an upcoming election. Join us in person or online for this interesting and free seminar at Parliament House Theatre. 🗓️ Wednesday 13 November 2024, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm (AEDT) 📍 Parliament House Theatre, Parliament House and live streamed Register now - https://shorturl.at/uFako

We urge swift action to develop Australia's sovereign AI capabilities, expanding our skilled workforce and onshore AI infrastructure. In a submission to the Inquiry into the use and governance of artificial intelligence systems by public sector entities, we recommend that a national strategy should • secure AI tools tailored to Australia’s needs, addressing security, privacy, and ethical concerns, • scale investment in fundamental AI science and building high-performance computing and data facilities, helping reduce dependence on foreign resources, • enhance data governance and adherence to UNESCO’s Recommendation on Open Science, and • provide clear guidance on AI adoption which will benefit science agencies, ensuring responsible AI integration without undermining expertise and judgment. Today marks the start of Indigenous Engagement: A Research Summit on Cultural Heritage in an Era of Reconciliation! Hosted by the RSC in collaboration with Royal Society Te Apārangi and The Australian Academy of Science, this inaugural summit marks the beginning of a three-year series under the Tri-Academy Partnership on Indigenous Engagement. #TAP2024 In lead up to the event, we invite you to read a new article by Frank Deer (University of Manitoba), Tom Calma (University of Canberra), and Carwyn Jones (Te Wānanga o Raukawa), which explores the crucial role of education in advancing truth and reconciliation. They highlight the transformative work of #Indigenous scholars in Canada, Australia, and Aotearoa New Zealand who are driving change through research and collaboration. 🔗 Read the article: bit.ly/4hnOURv

While growing up during China’s Cultural Revolution, newly elected Academy Fellow Emeritus, Prof Zheng-Xiang Li (Curtin University), never imagined he might attend university. But later, an encouraging comment from a teacher changed everything. Today, he’s transformed our understanding of Earth’s internal processes and the formation of supercontinents. Meet Australia’s brightest scientists in a weekly dose on #FellowFriday. #EarthSciences

We are working to promote good relationships between scientists and media in the Pacific in partnership with the Science Media Centre of New Zealand, Australian Science Media Centre and some of the Pacific Islands' most prominent scholars - including the Foundation Fellows for the Pacific Academy of Sciences who take on a role that shines a light on their science and the impact it has. While in Samoa, the Science Media Centres provided an informative session highlighting this critical relationship between media and academia and invited local journalists and the Pacific Academy Fellows to share experiences and learn from each other. "I appreciate the teachings and using a panel of journalists from NUSTV. It's wonderful to hear the experiences of the journalists from Samoa."
