We’ve achieved strong results in the Shanghai Ranking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2024 and The Australian Financial Review Best Universities Ranking 2024, released this week. Fifteen of our subjects rank in the top 50 with four in the top 10 globally in the GRAS. We’ve also placed equal third in Australia and maintained the top spot in Victoria for the second consecutive year in the AFR Rankings. The Australian Financial Review Best Universities Rankings 2024 confirms that Group of Eight (Go8) universities are the nation’s top performing universities delivering on research, equity and graduate employability. The Group of Eight Chief Executive, Vicki Thomson said the results highlighted what is at risk if current Government policy to cap international students is legislated. “There is no doubt that Australia punches above its weight when it comes to quality in both research and teaching. There is also no doubt that a cap on international students, combined with a flawed and distorted funding model threatens our ability to maintain world class outcomes – and that directly impacts our students and staff.”  This year’s AFR ranking confirms Go8 members as the top eight Australian universities for research – reflecting the $8.5 billion annual investment in R&D across the Go8. “Our universities undertake more than 70 percent of Australia’s university research and award half of all domestic research doctorates in Australia,” said Ms Thomson, “That research, and our teaching, is heavily cross subsidised from international fee revenue – a funding model that is flawed and long overdue for change. Our Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Mark Cassidy says, "We're working really hard to be the powerhouse for translating big ideas in fundamental research into solutions for the challenges society faces.’’ "We’re trying to embed ourselves with our community, with industry partners and policymakers within the university’s precincts, inverting the idea of a university. The Australian Financial Review reports on the broken university funding model that is putting Australian research output at risk – a situation sure to be made worse by the Government's proposed international student caps. Australian domestic spending on research and development is just 1.7 per cent of GDP, less than half the US figure of 4.9 per cent of GDP, according to OECD figures. “We are looking to work with the government to drive more industry and non-government funding into the sector so we can have a greater impact with our work,” says the University of Melbourne’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (research), Mark Cassidy. #UniMelb took the top spot in the Research pillar of the AFR Best Universities Rankings this year. UNSW Vice-Chancellor Attila Brungs, whose uni came second in Research in the Rankings says: “Sixty per cent of the money I get in research comes from international students. Getting rid of all the income that goes into research seems somewhat short-sighted and will certainly have significant long-term impacts on Australia." The Group of Eight - representing Australia’s leading research-intensive universities, including The University of Melbourne and UNSW – has developed a Roadmap report to the Australian Government – “Australia’s research and development (R&D) intensity: a decadal roadmap to 3% of GDP” – to achieve optimal investment in R&D over a decade. Huge congratulations to all The Group of Eight member universities who have made a clean-sweep of the top eight positions in the overall rankings in The Australian Financial Review's Best Universities Rankings for 2024 with a very special mention to The University of Queensland for taking the top spot for the second year in a row! The Australian National University took out second place and Monash University and UNSW taking equal third. This year's rankings calculated a university’s place based on four pillars: Teaching, Research, Equity and Career Impact, with UQ scoring in the top 10 in all four of the categories. Go8 unis also made a clean sweep of the Research category with the University of Melbourne taking out the top spot, UNSW second and University of Sydney third. In the Career Impact pillar, UNSW took the top spot with University of Sydney next. Go8 unis all featured in the top 10 in this category. The University of Adelaide, UQ, The University of Western Australia and ANU all placed in the top 10 in the Teaching pillar. A very important perspective from our northern neighbour on how the Government’s proposed international student caps – likely to be debated again in the Senate shortly - could damage Australia’s soft-power in our region. “Australia’s international education sector has long been one of its most effective tools for building strong diplomatic ties in the Indo-Pacific,” writes Hangga Fathana, Assistant Professor of International Relations at Universitas Islam Indonesia, who has more than 15 years of experience teaching Australian politics and foreign policy, “International students do not just contribute financially – they foster long-term human connections and goodwill that enhance Australia’s influence.” The Group of Eight remains implacably opposed to the introduction of international student caps.
