As we approach Black Friday, it’s crucial to reflect on the darker side of this shopping frenzy—textile waste and pollution.😱 The fashion industry is a major contributor to environmental damage, with estimates showing it accounts for up to 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Every year, millions of tons of textile waste end up in landfills, and the demand for "fast fashion" only intensifies the problem. As consumers, we can make a difference by choosing to buy less, supporting sustainable brands, and embracing the principles of reuse and upcycling. Let’s prioritise the planet and make conscious choices for you and your environment🌍 #SustainableFashion #TextileWaste #BlackFriday #CircularEconomy

🚨 Is Your Fashion Business Ready for Black Friday? 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eWrH2eWD 🗓️ Black Friday is just around the corner, but beyond the sales frenzy lies a critical issue... textile waste. 📦 Overproduction and clearance sales have created a waste crisis in the fashion industry that leads to 70% of fashion textiles in the UK ending up in landfills. There’s a more secure and sustainable way to clear out surplus stock: textile destruction. 🌍 In our latest blog, we explain how Avena’s sustainable destruction service helps retailers remanufacture and repurpose unsold stock, turning items into further life products. It’s an eco-friendly alternative to landfill or incineration, aligning with your sustainability goals and supporting a circular economy. 🤔 If you’re planning your Black Friday strategy, make sure you have a secure end of life solution in place for your garments. #Sustainability #TextileRecycling #CircularEconomy #FashionWaste #EcoFriendly #BlackFriday2024 #SustainableClearance

80% of products bought on Black Friday end up in landfills, incinerators, or poor recycling streams. Clothing makes up 41% of all Black Friday spending, so it’s clear that fashion needs change. 👕 With the linear ‘take, make, waste’ business model, brands rely on high-volume production and sales to drive profit. Meanwhile, consumers buy more than they need and lack responsible ways to part with clothes. But the future of fashion doesn’t have to be built on overproduction and waste. By embracing circular solutions, brands can thrive without relying on excess, and consumers can invest in wardrobes filled with intention and lasting value. Both brands and consumers can do more with less, through a circular fashion economy. Now that’s a deal worth saying yes to! Black Friday brings great deals and steep discounts, especially in the clothing sector. But behind the biggest shopping event of the year lie blatant human rights violations, unfair and unsafe working conditions, environmental damage, overproduction and lack of accountability, all disguised with aggressive marketing techniques. As consumers, we have the right to ask for the real story behind our clothing and demand transparency from fashion brands. This Black Friday, we invite you to take a moment to reflect before buying: 🧶 What’s in these clothes? Are the materials sustainable? Are they polluting our planet? How can I extend the lifespan of what I wear? 👩🏾🏭 Who made these clothes? Were they produced in fair and safe working conditions across the supply chain? 💸 How are these clothes sold? Are brands using greenwashing or socialwashing tactics to mislead me about their environmental and social impact? The European Union has made strides toward holding the fashion industry accountable, and this year, you may notice products claiming to be made sustainably and ethically. But there’s still a long way to go. As we enter a new legislative cycle, along with Changing Markets Foundation, Clean Clothes Campaign, ECOS, Fashion Revolution, European Environmental Bureau, industriAll Europe, and RREUSE - Reuse and Recycling European Union Social Enterprises, we are demanding stronger commitments in the EU Textile Strategy. Together, we want to ensure that all Europeans can take pride in what they wear - knowing their clothing is made with respect for both environmental and social justice. Have a look at our demands to find out how we are pushing for green and social ambition in EU textiles policies: https://lnkd.in/eJjCQ-sw

No #BlackFriday from us again this year. Or any year. Black Friday is a product of a broken system, which continually produces more than is really needed. Sure, everyone loves a bargain. But at what cost? Aside from the damage that heavy discounting does to the retail ecosystem, it's also destroying the natural ecosystem that we ultimately rely on. We can't demand other brands - or indeed consumers - make different choices. But what we can do is continue on our own journey of responsible production, proving that there are other, better ways. Better choices. Better for the planet, better for consumers and ultimately better for business. So, a timely reminder of just some of what we already do. There's much, much more to come in the next 12 months: > Small batch pre-order only - we only make products that are sold, and we cap the total products per-batch, eliminating overstock, discounting and dramatically reducing waste > Direct to consumer - selling direct cuts a huge amount of shipping, logistics, warehousing, merchandising all of which have a significant environmental impact > 100% use of recycled fabrics - we also minimise total number of fabrics used, and share offcuts across products to practically eliminate waste. We've even developed new production techniques such as printing our bib short leg grippers after the patterns are cut, so we get more pairs per roll of fabric > High ESG supply chain - our products are 100% sourced and manufactured in Europe by two of the very best factories, each of which is decades old and family run, with the highest ESG standards > 1% of top-line revenue to Stripe Climate - our contributions have gone towards funding 55 cutting-edge carbon capture projects to-date > 100% compostable packaging - it's the absolute least any brand can do, and our DTC approach also means no additional hang tags etc. Coming in 2025 we have a wide range of new initiatives, including formalising our existing repair program and a comprehensive trade-in and buy-back scheme. Sick of being overwhelmed by all the #BlackFriday deal emails, posts, and ads? So am I. Let's take a moment to reflect on the environmental impact of this day. Every year, Black Friday contributes to 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, with millions of products manufactured and purchased, often ending up in landfills shortly after. These deals encourage a 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, where items are bought on impulse and quickly discarded. This not only leads to excessive waste but also strains our planet's resources. Consider these facts: 𝟭. 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions and nearly 20% of wastewater. 𝟮. 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲: 80% of items purchased on Black Friday end up in landfill. 𝟯. 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Black Friday deliveries generate an estimated 429,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases each year. 𝟰. 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Plastic fibers from fast fashion are polluting oceans and wastewater. 𝟱. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻: If everyone consumed resources at the rate of OECD and EU countries, resources from the equivalent of 3.3 planet Earths would be needed. This year, TWENTYFAIRSEVEN wants to highlight brands that are making a difference by choosing not to participate in Black Friday. If your brand is dedicated to sustainability and ethical practices, we'd love to feature you. Let's inspire others to make responsible choices and protect our planet. 🌍🌿 Today isn’t just any Friday, it’s Green Friday! Let’s rethink how we consume, especially when it comes to fashion. While Black Friday often celebrates consumption, Green Friday reminds us to take a step back and reflect on the hidden costs of our choices. Fast fashion, for example, comes at an enormous price for our planet and people. Let’s look into 5 reasons to forego fast fashion: 🌍 High carbon footprint 💧 Water waste & pollution 🚮 Landfill overflow 🌊 Microplastic pollution 🤝 Exploitation Europe has the chance to lead the way in sustainable textiles. We can reduce waste and environmental harm by embracing innovative solutions like hemp, nettle, wool, and recycled cotton. At the Rethink Textile Hackathon student teams turned plants and waste into groundbreaking materials, such as durable, biodegradable fibres inspired by hagfish proteins. Together, we can shift towards a responsible fashion industry. Let’s make every Friday green. 💚 What is something you didn't know about the fast fashion industry?
