Are your staff bored silly?
Lately my cat (this is going somewhere, stick with me 😂 ) has been pestering me a lot while I'm working from home, because she's bored and wants attention/playtime/some sort of stimulation. I tell her that I'm working (this is not effective on cats) and eventually she wanders off. Because she's an indoor-only cat, this works with her, though I do feel like a terrible cat mother.
The thing is, if your STAFF are bored, they can quit and go somewhere else. They're not trapped in your house, they have options, and the recruitment market for the accounting and bookkeeping industry is very much weighted in the employees' favour, given how hard recruitment has been for years and years now.
It's also realistic for them to be looking at AI, and outsourcing, and fees dropping as entry-level work gets easier and cheaper to do, and for them to be thinking about upskilling to protect their livelihoods against these pressures.
What are you doing to keep your employees interested and engaged with their work? Are there things they could be doing that would help then learn new skills, offer more to your clients and future-proof the practice as well? If the answer is 'nothing', then sooner or later you'll probably have a recruitment problem. And if the issue is that you have too much 'grunt work' to be done to give them more interesting things to do, let's talk about automation and how Xero, along with tools like Hubdoc, can help to make things more efficient and give that time back for staff development.
Because a feather on a stick probably isn't going to cut it.
