Now that I quit my 8-5 job what's next? Transitioning to full time freelancing after being employed for almost 3 years has not been easy. I remember I even had a serious flu during the first week 😂. Imagine.. getting used to talk to people every now an then but all over sudden it's only you and your laptop. Wueeh 🥲 Not only that! Time management factor was another issue. Planning my work and meeting deadlines was a struggle as well. It's only 2 clients then but I used to spend a lot of time even scheduling simple videos on Meta Business Suite. I would constantly feel fatigued, overwhelmed and worried whether I made the right decision. But guess what, I did not give up. I had left my 8-5 job to pursue my passion and grow my business. That alone was enough motivation to get out of bed and push harder. I started posting content consistently and got even better at it. Some of my videos went viral within the same month and that's how I got a bunch of clients. Let's get to the juicy part. My income rised compared to what I used to get while on Employment. I want to thank some of the people who constantly motivated me even without them knowing Elvis Warutumo Marcela Antonina K. Mwinzi Daisy Keter Ruttoh Onesmus Networking with this people has positively impacted my life. I no longer get overwhelmed, or struggle managing my time. I think I needed a few weeks to get into track. I'm now a full time Social Media Marketer who is steadily building her brand and pursuing my passion. I might just create a controversy here, but I just have to say it. I see many influencers today talking about why 9-5 jobs aren’t good and why college graduates should jump straight into freelancing. Don’t get me wrong—freelancing, and running your own business is all an amazing opportunity with lots of potential. But it also comes with its own set of challenges and struggles. I worked in a 9-5 job for 7 years before starting my online business, and I can confidently say that the lessons I learned during those years have been incredibly helpful in overcoming the obstacles I face now in my online journey. My point is, don’t assume online business is going to be a walk in the park. A lot of influencers don’t show the tough side of it. If you get a chance to work at a corporate job, please take it, if nothing you can still gain some experience., you might even end up loving the 9-to-5 life! The important thing is, to make an informed choice that’s right for YOU, not just because some influencer says so.✌️

My 5 biggest struggles as a new freelance social media manager were 😕 1. Not much experience 2. No portfolio 3. Getting no response from cold outreach 4. Feel like I wasn't good enough 5. Money Anyone reading this who has the same struggles, Here's my advice: 💪 1. Do work for free to get much experience or Apply for Intern positions 2. Do work for free to build your portfolio 3. Post Content every day on LinkedIn with a Strategy 4. Get constructive feedback and improve next time 5. Let me tell you something. If you didn't get your first offer, You will be advised by mentors and influencers to start freelancing to gain some experience. After spending some months and years on it, when you try to apply for specific roles, companies will not entertain your freelancing experience. So here's a little Secret that's rarely spoken about: The field of marketing, especially Social Media Marketing, can get Exhausting!  NO, we can't always keep up with the Trends! NO, we can't always be on our toes, tracking and understanding the new Instagram algorithm! NO, we can't always be coming up with creative ideas for Topicals! I've been juggling a Full-time Job, Freelancing, and being an Active content creator here on LinkedIn. But guess what? I hit pause. You might be thinking, "But you're never really 'off' as a social media manager," and you'd be partially right.  However, I made a choice to quit my job, scale back on freelancing gigs, and, yes, even let LinkedIn take a backseat. Why? Because sometimes, you need to stop running to truly catch your breath. Here's your mid-week nudge: Work until your Body and, more crucially, your Mind signals a timeout. It's essential to take breaks! I get it, it's a Corporate race and you gotta stay ahead, but how will you if your mind's too heavy to keep up with your pace? Give it a thought! We can do hard things. 👍 One of my biggest fears about going out on my own wasn’t just if I could do it all—but whether I could create content for myself in the same way I’ve done for brands for almost 15 years. What would people think? Would it look “good enough”? Could I really figure out TikTok editing when I hadn’t done much of it before? But once I decided to pursue this long-time goal of launching my own consulting business before 40, something shifted. I sat down, built a website, and started editing videos. And let me tell you—I learned more about video editing and TikTok strategies in two days of hands-on work and trial and error than I had in the last five years. It hasn’t been perfect, but I’m learning by doing. I’m incredibly excited to explore this new chapter while looking for my next full-time social media opportunity. One year ago I was let go of my job. It didn’t come as a surprise, and I wasn’t especially sad about it. It was time to move on. The biggest lesson I learned in freelancing came with a 40K price tag. In my early freelancing days, I had just started offering Meta Ads services and landed a school client. I was Eager to build good relationships, I was hesitant to be strict about asking for payments. I was too shy to remind the client and didn’t want to push too hard, worried about seeming rude or unprofessional. One day, I called her and gently asked for payment. She reassured me, saying, "Don't worry, Alok ji, you'll get paid soon. Please wait a little longer." I didn’t push back, thinking it was my duty to be patient and understanding. But after another ten days of no payment, I reached out again. She had a new excuse, asking me to continue working and promising payment soon. This cycle repeated for 45 days. Meanwhile, I continued investing my own money and efforts into the ads, trusting her promise that I’d be reimbursed for ad spend as well. But then, things took a turn. She started ignoring my calls and messages, and eventually, I realized I’d been ghosted. I was desperate for that money at the time, and it was a rude awakening to learn that clients could simply vanish, leaving service providers out in the cold. The loss of 40K was a huge hit, especially when I was just starting out. But instead of letting it break me, I took it as a valuable lesson. Now, I always charge an upfront fee before starting any work. This experience taught me the importance of valuing my time, efforts, and expertise. If you don't want to face this sh*t, Follow these keypoints. 1. Always secure upfront payment before starting a project. 2. Don’t hesitate to set clear boundaries with clients. 3. Trust is important, but so is protecting yourself. 4. Experience is the best teacher, even if the lesson is costly. 5. Value your work, and others will too. P.S.
