This article was written by Yushi Hashizum and Mahamadou Tandia. Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is a large cause of death worldwide, impacting over 523 million individuals. Dyslipidemia is one of the biggest risk factors for ASCVD, therefore reducing its contraction is essential for mitigating ASCVD. This study investigates the ability of a dietary supplement containing monoglucosyl rutin (MR) to lower the lipid activity in individuals with low to mild hypercholesterolemia. Researchers found a statistically significant difference in serum LDL-C levels as well as potentially significant decreases in total cholesterol levels. Throughout the study, no safety concerns were raised about the safety of MR. They concluded that MR has the potential to be a preventative and therapeutic tool to improve long-term health and reduce cardiovascular diseases. A total of 44 Campylobacter isolates including 41 C. jejuni, two C. coli and one C. lari were used in this study. Although all of the C. jejuni isolates were verified by hipO based PCR assay, only 18 of the 41 C. jejuni were detected as positive by ceuE based PCR assay. Both of the methods showed negative reaction with C. coli and C. lari isolates. Objective: The purpose of this experiment was to study the trend of yield fluctuations and related traits in released wheat cultivars in Iran from 1968 to 2016. Methods: This experiment was conducted with 16 wheat cultivars based on a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications at Shirvan Higher Education Complex in North Khorasan during the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 growing seasons. Results: The findings indicated that the Iranian cultivars released do not have significant differences in terms of the number of seeds per spike, plant height, spike length, biological yield and gluten percentage, but grain yield, harvest index, 1000-seeds weight and protein percentage have improved by 61.84, 63.54, 62.37 and 14.4%, respectively, during the last 48 years. Additionally, wheat breeding in Iran has progressed towards single-spike formation. Path analysis showed that the plant height, biological yield, number of fertile tillers/m2 and harvest index explain more than 96% of yield changes and that traits such as the harvest index and number of fertile tillers are considered the most important traits in increasing and decreasing grain yield in Iranian wheat. Conclusion: According to the results of the causality analysis, it can be concluded that the selection for grain yield, based on other traits and without considering the relationships between them, may not provide accurate results. It is necessary to obtain a correct understanding of the role of the relationships between traits in breeding programs to increase selection efficiency.

The third edition comprises 104 monographs, categorized into four volumes: Volume 1: Traditional wild plants Volume 2: Pharmacopeial wild plants Volume 3: Common plants used in herbal medicinal products Volume 4: Herbal formulations Each monograph provides a wealth of scientific data, including: Botanical names and synonyms Plant parts used for medicinal purposes Major chemical constituents Indications for use Dosage and administration Contraindications Precautions Drug interactions Effects on fertility, pregnancy, and lactation Effects on ability to drive and operate machinery Adverse effects Overdosage Other relevant information This Egyptian herbal study serves as a comprehensive knowledge base, aligning with the World Health Organization's strategic objectives for traditional medicine. It provides a scientific reference for proving efficacy and safety, encompassing all available and updated scientific data on the selected plants. The studies are designed to facilitate the appropriate use of these plants and assist those involved in the herbal drug industry in preparing registration files for their products. Egypt's ranking as the fourth-largest exporter of herbal medicines globally in 2022 highlights the growing importance of this sector. This initiative is part of the government's plan to support the Egyptian pharmaceutical industry, preserve the country's natural resources, and promote the rational and scientific use of medicinal plants. By integrating traditional medicine into the national health system, Egypt aims to achieve sustainable development and attract new investments. HALAL DETECTION TECHNOLOGIES AND RELATED ANALYTICAL METHOD APPROACHES - PART 4: AMINO ACID PROFILING Amino acids (AAs) are the components of proteins produced from DNA sequences and act as the building blocks for proteins. Because they are essential components of proteins, they can be used to authenticate halal sources. Notably, in 2021, researchers detected and quantified 17 AAs, a significant advancement in the field. This comprehensive profiling method is more suitable for authentication than targeted methods. These 17 AAs were identified and quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a fluorescence detector (HPLC-FLD). Samples undergo freeze-drying to remove moisture, ensuring a moisture content of 10%, followed by acid hydrolysis and incubation at 110°C for 24 hours. Before analysing AAs, a calibration curve for each AA must be set up. This involves creating a series of working standards spiked with internal standards, such as L-aminobutyric acid (AABA). These standards are then injected into an ultra-HPLC diode-array detector (UHPLC-DAD). Spiking AABA helps reduce the sample matrix's interference and should be done on acid-hydrolyzed samples. Serial dilution should be avoided, as it causes systematic errors. Both working standards and samples undergo a crucial step before instrumental analysis-derivatization. This process enhances the detectability of AAs. For instance, researchers used ortho-phthalaldehyde (OPA) and 9-fluorenyl-methyl chloroformate (FMOC) to derivatize AAs before analysis. They used a fluorescence derivatizing agent prior to UHPLC-DAD injection, indicating that this derivatization method applies to both fluorescence detectors (FLD) and diode-array detectors (DAD). Analysis via UHPLC or HPLC involves elution with two mobile phases through a C18 column. An aqueous solution of AccQ.Tag concentrate is used as eluent A, and an acetonitrile: deionised water mixture is used as eluent B. The elution gradient is set to ensure successful separation and adequate resolution between adjacent peaks. The elution takes about 10 minutes. As the concentration of the working standard increases, the peak area increases, resulting in a linear calibration curve. After identifying and quantifying AAs, further multivariate data analysis (MDA) is recommended for authentication purposes, such as principal component analysis (PCA), discriminant analysis (DA), or partial least square (PLS)-DA. Inhibiting Influenza: Novel Molecule Halts Early Infection in Its Path. Scripps Research scientists, in collaboration with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, have developed a potential drug-like molecule that prevents type A influenza infection by blocking the virus from entering respiratory cells. These inhibitors target the hemagglutinin protein on the virus's surface, representing a novel approach to flu prevention that could be more effective than current treatments which target the virus post-infection. The findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, show that these inhibitors could also help treat existing infections and may not require yearly updates like vaccines. Comparison with Vaccines Mechanism: Inhibitors: Block the virus at the very first stage of infection by targeting hemagglutinin, preventing the virus from entering respiratory cells.
