Food for thought on the importance of ongoing training in the foodservice industry. Last week I had the pleasure of presenting at the National Restaurant Association Show in Chicago. I shared the importance of why we need to look at our industry as a "profession" and how we can support our employees to not only improve retention but to "buildup" people. Imagine this: 23% of restaurant staff don't have a high school diploma. Yet, ongoing training offers them a pathway to gain crucial skills and confidence, regardless of their educational background. It's about empowering them, boosting their self-esteem, and giving them a sense of pride in their work. Even though 22% of managers hold postgraduate degrees, continuous learning remains essential for everyone. It's not just about adding to their resume; it's about empowering them to become better leaders, to grow into management roles, and to continue excelling in their careers. For the 37% of employees under 25, ongoing training provides them with opportunities to develop professionally and personally. It's about enabling them to thrive in an industry they're proud to be a part of, doing work they're good at, and continually improving their skills. While quick-serve restaurants (QSRs) led the way with 4% growth in 2024, recruiting and retention remain top concerns. The report underscores the need for better benefits, regional wage adjustments, and tech adoption to improve efficiency and retention. Looking ahead to 2025, the focus is clear: prioritize employee-centric practices, modernize operations, and adapt to changing consumer habits. This was such a fun and informative Distill Ventures seminar I got to participate in moderated by Derek Brown. This is part of a series with topics Derek and DV have designed around all aspects of navigating the non-alcoholic category. 🍸🍹 People tend to lump what we are seeing with NA options into “the latest trend,” but really, this is unlike anything any of us have seen before, (mostly because we weren’t alive!) This isn’t like the tequila craze, or the bourbon boom; those were/are trends resulting from the masses RE-discovering, ( with a little help from celebrities and marketing 💰) a spirit, and then the world deep diving into them. Those options were always around, people just started paying more attention. With non-alcoholic spirits, what we are witnessing is the result of pure innovation! This is a BRAND NEW category (that didn’t even exist prior to 2015 ) JUST getting going. It’s like seeing the invention of gin in the 1500’s or vodka in the 1100’s! 🤯This is an entirely new spirit category and an option that I would guess ( based on everyday conversation) 1/3 people still don’t realize exists for them. If you haven’t checked these seminars out, definitely do! They have already covered some great topics, and will continue to do so. It’s been a long week—big events, endless moving parts, and I’m left feeling completely drained. As I sit here in my recliner, thinking about the week that’s passed and what’s still ahead, I realize something: I haven’t checked in with my number one team member—myself. How am I doing? Am I coping? Do I need to hit pause for a moment? We get so caught up in leading, managing, and juggling responsibilities that we often forget to check in with ourselves. But here’s the truth: you’re no good to your family or your team if you’re running on empty. Burning out doesn’t help anyone and self sacrifice serves no purpose if it leaves you depleted. Work hard, give it your all—but remember to take care of yourself too. Recharge with whatever fills your cup and keeps you going. For me, that means hitting the Jiu Jitsu mats this weekend to reset, recharge, and get ready for the madness ahead.
