Receiving an ATAR score is a milestone event that marks the end of 13 years of schooling. The best advice I can give you is to enjoy a break and then spend some time exploring what your natural talents/strengths are. When I left school I had no idea and bumbled around for many years trying different roles in very different sectors. That was good for building multifaceted skills and knowledge allowing me to jump into anything in the latter part of my career, but it meant I didn't have a clear idea of where I was heading. I know too many young people who start degrees, traineeships or other qualifications only to discover part way through, that their anticipated end goal is not actually what they want to do. I'm not suggesting that you should pick a job or even a sector and stick with it for life. I am suggesting that the best thing you can do is get a good sense of yourself early in your career so you can plan. Knowing what you naturally do best can help you target the skills, knowledge and experience you will need for the future. It's also vitally important that you understand yourself if you ever want to be a leader. You can't understand what motivates others or how you can support them unless you have learnt about yourself first. Every great leader I know has a good sense of who they are, the skills, knowledge and experience they can contribute to a role, a team or an organisation. There are many tools out there that may help you understand yourself but none better from my perspective than CliftonStrengths. It's a tool you could use in very practically throughout your career. Check out my latest Human Capital Leadership article, "Your Ability to Learn as an Indicator of Career Success." From the conclusion: "Organizations and career paths continue evolving faster than ever, requiring professionals to learn and grow constantly too. This essay argued a lifelong commitment to learning is a must for long-term career success, supported by extensive research and examples. Individuals boosting job performance through new competencies, and developing leadership potential to take on bigger responsibilities continually learn, progress and stay competitive. While technical skills matter, general learning mindsets serve professionals even better to navigate future changes creatively. Ultimately, organizations and one's career thrive when learning becomes a daily habit through ambition, humility and grit exemplified in the strategies shared. A learning orientation lays the surest foundation for peak contribution and achievement."
