Mulholland Drive isn't just a road. It's the way Los Angeles looks at dreams, at the fabric of infinite sleepless nights, and what transpires within them, as they spill over the city's tablecloth. Sometimes, it's the lens through which each of us views our lives from a distance, searching for paths, seeking meaning. In David Lynch's movie "Mulholland Drive," there's no predefined meaning; it's yours to interpret. The open-ended road is there for you, with its twists and turns ready to be explored. It's one of those films where, if you're in pursuit of meaning, the search itself redirects you to what you're seeking. It's the Möbius strip of cinema, where one cannot consistently differentiate between clockwise and counterclockwise turns. It's a loop that unfolds, and the only way to make sense of it is to stay close to your own truth. "Mulholland Drive" means whatever you want it to mean. It might be a daunting promise, granting you so much power over someone else's work, but that's precisely what the author intended. Nevertheless, we often find comfort in letting others do the interpretation for us, allowing meaning to come to us instead of actively seeking it out. We snuggle into someone else's words, avoiding the challenge of uncovering our own truths. David Lynch teaches us to take responsibility for our own interpretations, to have faith in what we think, and to understand that there's no absolute right or wrong in our interpretations. What we say isn't necessarily right or wrong; it's our perspective, and it exists as such. We spend our lives navigating a two-lane highway, marked by "Right" and "Wrong." Whenever someone points to a different path, a detour leading to the open field of freedom where these binary distinctions don't exist, we often hesitate due to the vastness of the unknown. We prefer to remain within the familiar lanes because that's what we've been taught since childhood: you're either right or wrong. However, thinking in this binary way is hardly thinking at all. After more than 20 years in the commercial production industry, I’ve seen firsthand how the process of creating ads has evolved—from meticulous planning to seamless execution. It used to take a small army: casting directors, stylists, location scouts, hair and makeup artists, lighting technicians, grip crews, directors, photographers, editors, music composers, narrators... the list goes on. Each project was a massive endeavor, demanding a blend of artistry, skill, and endless coordination. But now, everything is about to change. This Adidas commercial was created entirely by AI, saving immense amounts of time and resources. Yet, no matter how advanced AI becomes, it still needs direction. It still requires a human touch to guide, supervise, and ensure the final product connects with its intended audience. AI can't work alone. It needs human instruction and vision to generate stunning visuals and execute tasks that were unimaginable just a few years ago. As we step into this new era of AI-driven content creation, I’m both excited and optimistic. The tools are changing, but the essence of storytelling remains the same. Imagine their disappointment, likely sitting at home, reflecting on the great options they presented that were ultimately rejected. Let’s consider the countless untrained eyes that scrutinized their work and had a say in its final form. Often, it's the process itself, not just the outcome, that truly determines the success of a rebrand. In this case, I suspect the process may have derailed Jaguar's rebranding effort.

I thought I was a fly guy. It just hit the low 60s and high 50 degrees here in San Jose. It's super windy and cold (at least for me). I threw my Dickies work jacket and stepped outside thinking I would be fine. NOPE! I'm freezing! My jacket doesn't have the insulated lining inside that's supposed to keep me warm. I had to go back and switch to a thicker sherpa jacket. This experience made me think about problem-solving and its relationship to online presence for businesses. Your website doesn't have to "wow" everyone, but it does need to do its job—whether that's getting people to buy, book, click, move, swipe, download, etc. A jacket is a jacket but if it doesn't keep you warm when you're cold then it doesn't do anything for you (unless it looks cool). A website is a website but if it doesn't work for your business then it's not going to have any benefits. Foundational design and good structure can make a world of difference. Stay warm everyone!

In our Creative Studies series, we’ve looked at Awareness, with the San Diego Zoo’s “PANDAS ARE BACK.” outdoor board, and Differentiation, with two sushi boards. Now, on to giving some love, to the “Funner, CA” campaign for Harrah’s Resort and Casino, from the folks at 62ABOVE. Here’s a category that has the advantage of universal understanding. We all know what a casino looks like, and in San Diego’s upscale gaming market, that it’s going to be pretty close to Vegas-level. So, if you want a bump in audience beyond your regulars (who don’t need anyone to remind them to go), reach above slot payout footage, blackjack hits and stock-ish smiley, happy winners. Ante up for “Funner, CA,” a campaign that creates a state of mind from a re-named city inhabited by The Rincon Band of Luiseno Mission Indians. It’s a great way to set up the bigger casino concept of fun that’s wrapped up in fantasy you don’t find most places in life. Hosted by star “mayors” who don’t take themselves seriously, like David Hasselhoff, Jane Lynch, Rob Riggle and Martin Short, and you got yourself a show.
