I couldn't agree more with this insightful article from Megan Marshall on why unlimited coaching often leads to limited results. As a coach who has worked extensively with senior-level executives, I’ve seen firsthand how critical structured, goal-oriented coaching is for achieving meaningful outcomes. Early in my coaching career, I was eager to offer unlimited coaching to accommodate my clients' needs and be available for them at any moment. However, what I learned from practice was eye-opening: - Results were less impressive: The outcomes of these unlimited programs were not even remotely as impressive as those linked to specific business results. Without clear goals and timelines, coaching sessions lacked direction and focus. - Dependency on the coach: This type of engagement often developed an unhealthy dependency on the coach, which is counterproductive to fostering self-sufficiency and empowerment in leaders. - Straying from coaching principles: Unlimited coaching engagements often drifted away from the core principles of coaching, as outlined in the ICF Code of Ethics, turning into more conversational rather than transformative coaching sessions. AIIR Consulting's structured approach resonates deeply with me. In my experience, a well-defined coaching structure leads to significantly better outcomes, both for the individual and the organization. I enjoyed reading this discussion about culture and effectiveness with Marvin Boakye, the chief human resources officer at Cummins. ➡️ Some of the main points: 1️⃣ Treat culture as a strategic imperative. "Strategy and culture are two sides of the same coin." 2️⃣ Top leaders commit to shaping the culture. "Setting a culture, setting a tone, setting deliberateness." 3️⃣ When someone is a poor cultural fit, recognize it and address it. "Give people the ability to self-select out." 5️⃣ Translate core values into leadership behaviours. "Accountability starts at the top." 6️⃣ Maintain your core values, but evolve leadership behaviours. Are external change drivers a threat or an opportunity for your company and its employees? Who is involved in making a positive difference? One of the highlights of my summer was a series of conversations with Dennis Boecker, an innovation expert and friend who I've known and respected since the early days of WOL at Bosch. This short article we wrote together describes how social learning programs can transform passive awareness (of SDG, ESG, etc) into active contribution. By enabling employees to discover their personal connection to the company’s goals and how to act on that, companies can foster higher engagement and a greater sense of belonging while cultivating additional sources of innovation and organizational resilience. A fantastic handbook, edited and contributed by so many amazing scholars. I had the pleasure of co-authoring two chapters with two incredible colleagues. The first chapter, written with Dr. Caleb Seung-hyun Han, explores skilling as a promising framework for applying people/workforce analytics to HRD practices. The second chapter, in collaboration with Dr. Kibum Kwon, challenges the long-standing, but potentially outdated, HR wheel (HRD/HRM distinction) framework by examining what professionals in the field actually do.
